It's not necessary for the first 10 years. After that, it's sometimes helpful to be able to reset the neck angle easily without having to shim it.
Millions of guitars work without one, but it's a nice touch. It's very easy to build too. Fender should include it on all standards from Squier to CS...
Structurally they are pretty much identical, except for the "better" pickups in the 339 Ultra and early 339 PRO. The pickups in the PRO series have been changed after a short while. Some people consider the original Burstbucker better. I have the later Classic Pro or something and I like them.

Epiphone doesn't seem to care for Switzerland enough to make their ES-339 hard cases available around here.
Do you by any chance know of another brand which makes a compatible hardshell case ?
