What is the best distortion and/or overdrive pedal?

It's interesting to me how nobody ever recommends the regular old tube screamer in threads like this. It's the platonic ideal of overdrive, really. Nice and creamy tones with a good healthy mid hump so you can cut through. What's not to love?

Joshua Bell makes about $32 for 45 minute "show"

That's a great piece. It won Gene Weingarten the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Feature writing. Morning rush hour at L'Enfant Plaza is kind of a worst-case spot for any kind of busking. It's in what I think of as the Soviet quarter of DC -- lots of ghastly soul-crushing sixties-era concrete...

Idea for modelers: keep it simple

Actually, I think this is exactly what Vox is doing with the AC30VR and AC15VR.

    Should I shave my head?

Go for it! If you shave your head and don't like it, hair does grow back. And everybody needs to feel the wind on their scalp at least once in their life. To say nothing of walking in the rain; that's a real kick. I started shaving my head about six years ago. Never looked back.

    Reverend Guitars

You really can't go wrong, but for most of the bands you've named, you'd probably be happier with the Warhawk II HB. That being said, both models are excellent, versatile guitars. Either one will go with you in just about any stylistic direction you want to go. Are those guitars even good, you...

    Flatline Guitars

Kind of an unfortunate brand name, isn't it? Makes me think if you hook one of those bad boys up to a defibrillator, you might have something...

    The Now Playing Thread

This morning it was "Pocket Symphony" by Air. I'm going to see them next week. Right now, since I'm at work, I'm listening to "Prowler in the Yard" by Pig Destroyer. I won't post the cover art because it might be disturbing.

What is good music according to Iggy Pop. Does it have to have technical merit?

As opposed to the Rolling Stones or Clapton, eh? Man, at the beginning of that piece when they play the intro to "Search and Destroy," I could feel my pulse kicking up a little.

It Might Get Loud ,anyone ?

I had exactly the opposite reaction. I hadn't really paid much attention to Jack White or his music before seeing the movie, and I thought he came off as a very smart, thoughtful, articulate guy who has clearly put a lot of thought into his music. Much like Page and the Edge, actually. I don't...

    Pedal arrangement

With certain power supplies like the One Spot, the Planet Waves tuner makes a high-pitched hum unless it's the last pedal in the lineup. So that's where mine is. Dirt before wah is intense and nasty (often in a good way!). Wah before dirt is more vocal and organic-sounding. For a while I was...

Tele Hum grounding problem - need help

Sigh. Well, ok, I was wondering how I'd spend next weekend.

Tele Hum grounding problem - need help

Sorry to dredge up the old thread, but did you ever figure out what your problem was, Robert? My tele has lately developed the same symptom. Buzzes like a fridge when I'm not touching anything, and all my wiring connections look sound. I'm perplexed.

What's the hardest song you ever learned to play on guitar?

For me it was Fernando Sor's Study #19 (Op. 29 No. 13). The Sor studies are each intended to focus on a particular aspect of guitar technique, and number 19 is all about barre chords. It made me realize that I didn't want to be a classical guitarist after all. Actually I still feel kind of...

The Axis of Awesome 4 Chords

Right, the lower case is minor. For the dim seventh, you'd write viiº. In many contexts if you want the seventh in the bass it's more common to use a V chord in first inversion instead (e.g. A/C# in the key of D), depending on how you want to resolve it.

The Axis of Awesome 4 Chords

But did you notice? Starting with "Save Tonight" through "Canvas Bags," the video picks on songs that go vi, IV, I, V (or i, VI, III, VII, depending). Self Esteem is in that second category. It's the same four chords, but starting in the middle of the sequence. Pretty slick! This video...
