I don't know whether this has been mentioned here before, but some of the best, most vibrant wood dyes are actually those alcohol based stains intended for coloring leather. They are available in a wide range of colors, and are deep penetrating as well.

I agree that it looks like a rash from an allergic reaction of some sort. I've had similar outbreaks on my scalp a time or two, and it went away in short order.

I have one of these. It's a wee little thing, and as you say, save for the slightly off putting plastic case it does it's job without a complaint from me.

You MUST have gotten a bad neck on the first one. I have an XV-510 Lemon drop that has a really low action with zero fret buzz or other issues. The honeymoon period is long over, and I still find it to be a great, low cost LP copy.
