I've had clients that did that. You can keep your tuner in line also. Check out the Boss LS2 Line Selector if you have a more elaborate rig. You can route FX and/or A-B amps...I've used it before, but it might be more than you need...feature-wise...

Brian, I see you hated the stock pups, too... I yanked those stock pups out and the ones in there now I got from a Heritage Firebird... Those stock pups were obnoxiously hot..which led to obnoxious tone... With these you can hear the guitar..the amp..the pick dynamics a lot better...rather...

Nothing to it, really, if you know how to solder properly. Draw a schematic of exactly which wire goes where before you start. Make sure the new pup wires are the same colors as the old. If not...refer to your schematic and the instructions that come with the new pups.
