As I posted in another thread I just got a used resonator guitar. Ive wanted one for awhile after hearing a friends of mine. Ive always admired that slide sound. Plus imo that overall tone created by the resonator to me adds a new detmention to playing acoustic.

After, finally getting a chance to really set down and jam on it for awhile. Been kicking around a little with the songs Traveling Riverside Blues, and If I had a possesion over judgement day. Both Robert Johnson songs, with that first one covered by Led Zeppelin and Alter Bridge(see Myles play it solo on their lone dvd). I have to admit this thing is a blast. I have to play it more like a dobro right now, cos the slide just isnt comfortable. Going to order me a pinky slide since thats the best feeling finger for me, just the socket I use know weighs to much for my pinky.

So now Im curious how many of you have played or owned either a resonator or a dobro????

We had one over at the Fender showroom. It was a resonator guitar in silver/ metal body I think. This thing was heavy as 10 bricks, but it played absolutely great and it sounded wonderful. We have tuned it to open G and played with a plexiglas bottleneck.

It's a wonderful addition to a regular instrument assortment and I was also long time thinking about getting one, especially for RJ songs, which I totally love!!!

In my eyes you can't go wrong with a resonator, because it has a great entertainment and fun value which is most important to me. :thumbsup

This little darlin' is shipping out to me today ~ It's a Republic Tricone.
I had a Liberty wooden bodied resonator some years back but I sold it.
The one I wish I still had is a '56 National Resophonic student model. It was a Les Paul shape, but smaller and with a short bolt on neck. The body was covered with a mother of pearl pattern contact paper. Being a solid body it wasn't all that loud but the cool factor was off the chart.

I've owned a Johnson JR-200 squareneck reso (a/k/a 'dobro') since Christmas '06.

If I could only devote more consistent time & effort to it, I might actually get to play it decently. Just when I feel like I've accomplished something, I get distracted from sticking with it to get past a plateau. If it were the only instro I played, that would be more attainable. Perhaps someday in the not too distant future, it will be. This, and a lap steel. I got them with that distinct possiblity in mind.

That is a curious beast Otaypanky! Do you have a full shot of it? Also, it looks pretty dirty and tarnished, is that a "thing" with those style guitars? You know, like some sax players seem to never clean the outside of their sax so it's all tarnished up.

Oh and BTW "dobro" means "good" in a couple of languages. Probably not where the name comes from but, meh, I know random stuff

I have this one: http://www.libertyguitars.com/fa100.htm but with a copper top. Pretty cool...Open G....I use a variety of slides from brass to glass to lead crystal to stoneware (fire-hardened clay). Just not enough time to practice.

Plus, I've got 3 bad-a** lap steels to boot. Lots of slidin'.

I started 10 years ago with a Cort wood resonator (was not so great) then bought 5 years ago a Johnson JM-998 metal body resonator which is great and has a nice playability (smooth neck and low action) And finally three years ago I bought a National Duolian from 1933 and really enjoy playing it :thumbsup

I think the name Dobro is derived from Doprea Brothers.

I bought a Dobro from a friend of mine earlier this year. He was selling it because he hadn't been using it so I picked it up for a great price. It's a Regal Black Lightning square-neck Dobro. Here's a link to the one that I have:

I've been working with a Jerry Douglas DVD which is great, and I've used my Dobro for some recordings. It's a total blast to play this instrument. It sounds amazingly good for the money I spent on it. It has decent quality resonator cone iand it projects like crazy.

I've been working with the classic bluegrass Open-G tuning and trying to get familiar with that.

I need to spend some more time with it, but so far it's been really fun to play with. I'm thinking about getting a pickup for it. Any reccomendations would be welcome.
