Influential Artists from the Pacific Northwest!

inspired by my buddy David (Algonquin)'s Canada thread. And because I enjoy studying music by region. I have heard it done a lot with jazz, but you don't see it discussed much for more popular music. So, what influential artists can you think of from the Pacific Northwest? I am defining PNW as Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and I guess Montana. I am not saying specifically Seattle, as although there was a lot of music out of Seattle, a lot of "Seattle" music really came from outlying places like Aberdeen or Olympia.

I will start us off with a couple gimmes:

Maybe my favorite band from my hometown of Tacoma. Even George Harrison described these guys as an influence for their American tone! This is a great vid that is worth watching through.

There are lots more out there, and not just grunge. Anyone else? :thumbsup

Death Cab is from Bellingham. I saw them there once at the world famous 3B Tavern. I actually liked the opening band much better (although I can't recall who they were).

Steve Miller is a Northwesterner. KMFDM now calls Seattle home. Oh, and don't forget Screaming Trees, one of my favorite bands in the late 80s, early 90s. I'm sure I'll think of more later...

Well, I'm not sure about being very influential, but John Popper from Blues Traveler lives up the road from me in the town of Snohomish. I do loves me some Blues Traveler bass lines!:rockya

Former Yes drummer Alan White lives nearby in Newcastle and is very active in the local music scene. I met him at a local drum event and he's a super-cool guy.

The Sonics, from Tacoma, Washington



They influenced these guys for sure.



This guy has been known to do it too.



What I love about the Sonics is the way they wore their own influences on their sleeves, but still had a sound that was their own. Paraphrase, don't plagiarize.







Derivative isn't always bad. It has to be filtered, not copied outright.

I figured you for a Sonics' fan given much of what came later that we both like. I love a lot of music from the days when the saxophone was a standard instrument in a rock and roll band.

Wayne Horvitz and Zony Mash from Seattle.

One of my favorite jazz-funk-rock bands.

Wayne Horvitz - organ
Timothy Young - guitar
Keith Lowe - bass
Andy Roth - drums



They no longer play electric as Zony Mash, but they do play together in another project.
