Mountain climb 2011

Here is a bit of what I did with the family this past week. It looks like it will be our only climbing outing for 2011. I may be able to do some others but it will be without the family.

This is in the Pioneer range just east of where Sunvalleylaw lives. It's a pretty rugged and jagged range and the tops are about shoulder width if even that.

This is the view of the south side of the cirque going in

and a view of the north side of the cirque with the Devil's Bedstead on the right

I climbed the unnamed peak on the right here

Looking down below me you can just make out my daughter at the lake side circled in red

And now what it really looked like. I'm not sure the picture really shows how straight up and down this is, but it's a long way down. Can you still see my daughter?

She's pretty into it too, but at a much smaller scale...for now.

What's that black hole sun in the one showing your route?

Mrs. SVL had a great trip out to Alice lake too, and did some scambling around to twin lakes and another lake or so. Got rained on Fri on the way in, and again this afternoon on the way out. Did you stay dry?

We stayed dry except for a mild cloudburst late Friday afternoon, but we were back at camp by then and just hopped into the tent and read for a while. I love the pitter patter of raindrops on my fly...most of the time. Otherwise, absolutely perfect weather and temp. The smoke from those fires wasn't that fragrant but it was making me sneeze nonetheless.

The black hole is a fusion time space warp where aliens enter our realm. Either that or it was a spot created errantly by my editing program when I entered my route on the mountain.

Lots of folks with the sneezles over there too. Might be the smoke, which was smelt part of the time last week, or some late bloom of rabbit brush or something. Pitter patter on your fly? :thwap

That looks like some awesome country. Sort of like the North Cascades, but without the dense brush.

That view down the cliff gave me vertigo just looking at it.

I'd really enjoy hiking into those lakes. Fish??

I love traipsing around the mountains, but my fear of heights keeps me away from cliffy areas.

The only mountain that I've climbed was Glacier Peak in the North Cascades which was a low-angle snow/glacier walk-up.

Stunning views from up that high though.

Fish? Did you say fish? Yes there are plenty and these lakes are hard enough to get to that they don't get fished out. Plenty of them this size and they'll bite anything. Shhhh.

I can see tossing out a fly to catch some tasty dinner. I've only fly fished the coastal flats for redfish and speckled trout, but I'd give it a try in those lakes.

They are pretty easy to catch. They are hungry and not that smart because they don't get fished very often...and they ARE mighty tasty..but your hands will smell like fish for a week after cleaning them. It's worth it though.

Oh yes. Trout from the high lakes is quite a delicacy. They taste so much better than the mushy fish from lowland lakes.

Nothing much better than pan-frying a fresh-caught trout in some butter and cajun spice.
