Mahavishnu Orchestra for the older guy like me was top Jazz fusion band of this time with the John McLaughlin,Billy Cobham,Jan Hammer,Jerry Goodman,Rick Laird edition.

Then McLaughlin went to a more acoustic & mystic period with Shakti mostly india music ..

Here s an old clip ,nice to see again

As a huge fan of McLaughlin's I have mixed feelings about Mahavishnu Orchestra. I love McLaughlin's playing and the overall concept of the band, however, I absolutely loathe Jan Hammer. It's not so much what he plays (though much of that I don't care for either) as it is the tones he uses. Organs and keyboards are capable of the widest range of very cool sounds, but it seems Hammer prefers the cheesiest and most annoying tones. Having come from bands with Zawinul, Corea and Hancock, I think McLaughlin could have demanded better from a keyboard player than Hammer brings to the table. Now Shakti, that was some beautiful playing from McLaughlin (of course I adore Indian music).
