Any one of the first 18 guitars would look great under the tree.

I keep looking at the 335 and it is just a beautiful guitar. I'm thinking of putting 57 Humbuckers in the Dot since that is about as close as I will get to a 335.

An early Merry Christmas to all you guitar and gear wishers.

Ohh to have a 335...
I love the 57's I put in my Epi LP... a very nice upgrage. I've considered putting them in my Artcore as well... they're that nice.

Here's a YouTube clip of a 335 with a 57' Classic in the Bridge, and a BusrtBucker in the neck... also very nice.

I have the 57 Classics in my Sheraton II. You've heard how that sounds (8804). If you do decide to go this route, it would be worth it to replace the stock Epi pots at the same time. My dealer/tech swears by 500K DiMarzio Custom Taper (Audio Taper).

Hi Ted... yup, the posts have been about Gibson 57's. I'm not sure about the GFS p/u's other than they cost about 1/3 the price.

Here's a clip I found on YouTube with a Gent using the GFS Vintage 59' Alnico's.

EDIT: Here's one for Strum too! (GFS Vintage 59' Alnico's.)

Here are some recommendations from another site:

I used Kent Armstrongs, vintage paf sound, 8K output, 12 pole pieces, chrome covers.
I love 'em!
I wouldn't hesitate to tell anyone to use them, and I'd compare them to just about any price pup out there.

the real difference is going to be in personal taste anyway. it always is.

I put KA's in just about all my guitars, and I've not been unhappy so far.

I'd do the caps and pots while I was in there.. not expensive, makes a nice difference, and lasts longer.

and another:

Well Dimarzio´s PAF...is one that you can use...
Super Distortion...i have them...and they sound great on the epi.

and yet another:

I got my Epi Dot in a pawn shop with hard case cheap. First thing I did was take it to Nashville to my guitar tech. We put in a 57 Classic in the neck and a Burstbucker 3 in the bridge. Bone nut to replace the plastic, crowned and polished the frets, and then when I got it home I replaced the tuners with Gotohs.

Man, what a difference. Sustain, warmth, crunch and real 335 sound for a budget price. I bought two 57 Classics new at my local mom and pop music store, and one of them was dead on arrival and had been cut on in the wiring! So my tech got the Burstbucker 3 used from one of his buddies and put that in. I got a refund on the dead 57.

Hey JS. You want a 335, and you have a dot. I would just get the 57s and also change the pots at the same time. Throw in a switch craft switch and you will have your 335. My 335 has the Bill Lawrence pickups and they are sweet. I had thought about putting a set of 57s in my Sheraton but since I bought the 335 I don't need to. The next thing you will be saying "yea I wanted 57s but I put the GFS in instead. "
Remember when working on these type of guitars there are two ways to change things. One is the "cheater" way to splice the wires at the pickup cavity, and the correct way is to fish out the pots and solder them correctly. If they have to fish them out you might as well replace them. Also the switch on the Epi dots WILL fail they are crap so put in a Gibson or Switchcraft. A few more bucks but then you will have it dialed in. The Bone nut is an extra expense and for me the Jury is out on that one. I had that done on an Ebony Sheraton and I truthfully could not hear the difference.

ZMAN, I'm going to have to do something with it. Since I want to mod the Washburn, maybe I will do that first to develop some skill at soldering.

I want to make sure whatever I do on the Dot, it is not going the cheap or short-cut route. I want to make sure I have quality product going in. Although the Dot isn't a high end guitar, it is and has been my favorite throughout the rotation of guitars I've owned.

On these semi hollow guits, just remember to tape off the F holes and the front of the guitar. Tools and pots etc can leave some dandy marks.
Not as easy as a solid body or a Strat, but doable. I personally would rely on my tech. If you can't fix it with a 9/16 socket and a ratchet, I ain't touching it.

JS it is too damn cold out. I am not moving from my fireplace today. I have extra batteries for the clicker and I could wear out a set today.
I also have a complete set of Metric or regular. What a pain in the butt.
Working on old and new I need both.

Hey, I bought that kerosene heater I mentioned in a thread a few weeks ago, the thing works great. After about an hour you can work in the garage in a short sleeve shirt. I hate working on a car in the cold.

Today I had to get that tractor set up for winter and then I started working on a Camry that needs the fuel filler tube replaced and part of the return fuel line. I have to get that one back on the road before the lease expires on the Highlander. No more leases, no more new cars for me.

Oh, that is a nice guitar ZMAN.

Andy, my wife just put you on a "hit" list. You are not suppose to provide me with any links that might make me say "I promise, this is the last one".

Be on the lookout of an angry looking woman wearing sunglasses and carrying an assault rifle.

Oh my God. Your wife has a twin at my house. It is getting so she is looking over my shoulder at what I am doing on the internet. One day I brough up a Porn sight to get rid of her, and she was OK with that. Just as long as I don't look at any guitar sites. That is bad!
I have had an electric heater for my garage for 20 years and I still haven't hooked it up.
I just can't think about cars in the winter.

hey guys ! just how cold is it? was freezing here yesterday, today rather nice...high 50s......hate winter..more and more.... Dan

Dan,

Are you on the Missouri or the Kansas side of KC?

I lived in Wichita for a long time and hated the winters there. Lots of snow, bitter cold, ice rain, it generally sucked. Then it was hotter than hell in the summer. :thwap:

Yesterday there was snow on the ground, but by time I went home for lunch, it was sunny and about 65 degrees in Colorado.

Hey Dan today it is plus 5 Celsius, aprox 40 F. It was snowing here but it was flurries and melting. Totally a grey day. I have already played guitar for a couple of hours and made Guacamole so sitting beside the fire it "seems" like the warm south.

Tomorrow the same except

Snow Showers
100% chance of precipitation

I'm not sure what it's doing right now by work (entirely different world up there). When I left on Friday they were saying a foot of snow, but I don't think that will be the case.

Yea i actually just got my first gibson off a craigslist deal. I paid 200 for an SG faded but the neck was broken but fixed with ****** epoxy. Sadly, I came home one day after golf and the string tension pulled it back apart. I used some serious "sumo" glue and im still gonna put two screws in, just gotta pick up a drill bit small enough after class today. I know it had nothing to do with what ur convo about the 335s and stuff, but I just love it. It plays great when it actually works. But to add to the convo, I have an oschar schmidt 335, nothing like a real gibson 335 but it actually sounds good with the jazz pickups.

Okay, we talked about this ES335, we've established that the ES335 is my "dream" guitar. So did everyone decide to get together and buy me one for Christmas?

I need to abstain from guitar buying and put my money towards a good used ES335. There is absolutely no guitar on my "want" list that is rated higher than the ES335.

Very nice Mark!

I played an ES-335 off the rack the other day and hate to say it, but was not really impressed. Granted it would have benefitted by a set up and a new set of strings, but it didn't light my hair on fire. This isn't to say I still wouldn't love to have one someday.

The 335 that I own was owned by a friend. I had it on and off at my place for 4 or 5 years and didn't like it either. It just seemed hard to play.
Several years later he ran into hard times and I offered to buy it. I had learned a lot more about guitars and I had found an excellent tech to set them up. I ran it over to him and when I got it back it was like a new guitar. It was in mint condition because of 17 years of case time, and now it played like a dream I paid him what he paid for it in 1990 which was 2000 Can. Now it is the best guitar I own and plays like a dream. Alpparently it had never been set up or intonated right from the factory.
