What exactly do people mean when they speak of an archtop's projection? After reading around, I don't think they mean the same thing as loudness.

Do they mean that it throws the sound forward so that you can hear it well in the audience?
 
They tend to be a bit mid focussed too so they cut through more than a flattop. A bit like using a Tube Screamer as a booster. That mid hump really pushes the sound out there.

So projection is a rough synonym to "cuts through the mix".?
 
I thought they meant one of these?
