I don't know what to think about this. Artists deserve to be compensated for their work. Theoretically they should be through ASCAP. To say that the Devils are making millions on the ad implies that they wouldn't if it weren't for the song, which is tenuous at best. Copyright law is so convoluted ("No, that's a 'dramatic performance!' Even though we weren't there! Really!") it's almost impossible to comply with it. Of course, the Devils should have a flock of lawyers on retainer to deal with these things, unlike us normal human beings. $10 million seems to overvalue their contribution by at least an order of magnitude. In the end, only the lawyers win. I'd prefer if they couldn't play music at deafening levels at a hockey game anyway. If I wanted to go to a lo-fi concert, I'd listen through my phone's speaker.
