Birthday Ideas

My birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks. I've pretty much given up on the idea of selling my Fender for that ivory Jackson RR3. Too little return.

Anyway, I toyed with the idea of looking at a Tech 21 SansAmp British pedal. The reason for this is that Marshall tones tend to be my thing. I would also be able to use it for recording--something my AD30VT doesn't work so hot for. I also have been having a rough time dialing in a distortion tone on my AD30VT that I'm continuously happy with. The reviews I've read have been positive, although it's a little disturbing how few reviews of it there are out there.

I toyed with the idea of getting a Blackheart Little Giant, but I don't think it'll really accomplish what I'm looking for. It certainly won't do metal without a pedal which makes me not a whole lot better off than I am right now. The only little tube amp that seems like it'd do it for me is a Soldano, but I can't see myself having ~$1,400 to drop on an amp in the next 15 years.

Robert: I've only briefly messed with the Vypyrs. I didn't really find anything with them that I wasn't already getting out of my Vox. In messing around with the controls, it seemed like it was thisclose to falling apart at any moment. If I were to go modeling amph again, I'd look at the newer Vox VT line first. Those at least put the line out after the tube which hopefully would improve the recording tone. But once again, I don't know if it would be enough of an improvement over what I have to justify it.

Blazes: I've heard about those pedals before, but $275 . . . yowza. (Update: I noticed that it's actually selling for $199. Better, but still $50 more than the Sansamp.)

Have you considered a Marshall Guv'nor? Marshall in a box (and more) and not expensive. You'll have to wait a bit for the crunchy tones in this video.



BTW, I think this is one of the best pedal demos I've seen on the 'tube.

How about the Zoom pedal , man I can get so many different amp sounds, and dial up any adjustment that you could imagine on this thing. With it plugged into my FENDER Princeton it really can crank.

I've got (or, more accurately, my son has) a Zoom 505II. A nice enough pedal, but I don't really want/need all the extra doodads. The appeal of the Sansamp British is that it'd theoretically give me all the Marshally goodness I could hope to have without spending big dollars and use it for recording too. If it plays nice with my Vox, all the better.

WRT to the Guv'nor I've heard a lot of online clips of them and I know several guys on here love them, but for some reason I've come away nonplussed. It also seems to be more of a distortion box which isn't necessarily what I'm looking for. Although in the manual there are settings for "Screaming Solo," which is a bonus, even if it isn't an amph.

If you're looking for a small amp (you referred to the Blackheart Little Giant)
that gives you some Marshall tones, this high gain little beast might do the trick for you.

I've read some reviews that the distortion on this baby is pretty good:

I would just get the Sans amp. If that was your first inclination, I'd stick with it. I have the Radial Plexitube, great distortion pedal, but expensive. I think the Sansamp is more what you're looking for, I'd get it. You can always add a dirt pedal later, but right now I'd get the Sansamp if I were you.oke:

I remember seeing a thread on another BBS about the Blackstar. It seems that palm muting gives some weird tones. I'd check that amp out very carefully before purchasing, or wait til Blackstar irons out the problems with it.

Well, I thought this deserved its own thread. From what limited amount I've read about the issue you mention seems to be with the 1x10 cab. *Edit:* OK, one thread seems to indicate it may be more than that. Your advice is probably good, but I'm not doing anything on this today anyway
