I'm thinking it's about time I do a back up of the iMac I bought last year. Any rec's on a bullet proof proceedure anyone ?
What about disk cleanup stuff like what you would normally run on a Winbox ? is that kind of task even needed ?

My practice is probably not the best, but I just regularly back up docs to a separate hard drive, and archived cdrs. I don't worry too much about backing up apps as I usually have the install discs. I don't really use a program for checking for updated items such as retrospect or something like that. I just copy over the relevant folders in the directory. Pretty rudimentary, but it works for what I need. I have Springcleaning for upkeep, but don't use it enough. I "zap the PRAM" and verify permissions once in a while too using the disk utility program in utilities. That is about all I do.

Backing up your important files to an external drive or DVD once in a while is a good idea. Stuff like drive fragmentation doesn´t happen on Mac OS X, but I run the brilliant maintenance app Cocktail once in a while just to make sure that the machine works at its best. http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/index.php
SunvalleySteve is correct, you should also check & repair the disc permissions. Especially after installing a OS update or a new application.
