Diary of a SG build

Ok ill be brief bought for $200 limited edition flip flop paint.Nasty break.In anticipation of getting this done soon(And Tots kick in the arse ) I thought I would start this pic diary of the project.Those who have seen the start of the build bear with me ,my camera needs disks(sony:thwap: ) but recent pics coming.This has been a slow build only because ive allowed about 6 months for the neck to set/up .More or less just my instinct nothing technically proven in doing so.Enjoy and comment.Questions and full build details ill address when the project is done if thats ok with everyone!:rockon:

Last pic of headstock is final. The finish is not grainy as appears using macro zoom on my camera but smooth as silk. Final pictures will show better. Last pic of body is final satin.Body was obviously rode hard ,I did enhance the relicing on the face .Hopefully it looks good and not cheesey.I will also give a rundown on parts and names of upon completion!

Muddy....this is going to show my complete lack of knowledge...but how in the blue hell did you paint that headstock and leave the Gibson Logo on it? Did you block out the logo somehow or did you apply a new logo sticker?

Kazz ill just touch on this briefly as ill explain in full the automotive approach I took at builds end.

If you see where its taped off ,I had to bring this finish part up after repair.After leveling I just finished sanding from about 220 on and wet sanded with automotive body sanding sheets on final coat.The part taped off just needed a light scuffing as the logo is under the clear coat.Then a full on clear and final wet sand .:rockon:

I can't figure why Gibsons always break right there, at least all I've seen break right there. (This is not a question, btw.)
I don't recall seeing any Gibson copies breaking there, tho.......:whatever: :whatever:

Lookin good Mud! I get the feeling you have had automotive body shop experience. I did as well. It really helps in doing the finishes on these gitars. Look forward to seeing more of your project. The SG has alway been a comfortable guitar to me. Nice project indeed!

same here, my father's SG, and my friend's V is like that as well, though not as bad, I have two possible explanations:

1) the wood reacts to moisture and cracks like that naturally, though I doubt it because mahogany is a solid wood and stands up to moisture changes particularly well

2) since the necks are all one piece, the short grains on them are too weak and may not stand up to all that tension as well as the headstock being made from two pieces.

that SG now deserves a psychedelic paint job ala Cream!

they break right there simply because mahogany is a rather soft wood (if you know what I mean, not as hard as maple at all) and the design is poor. There's just not enough wood on that angle right there.

What year is that SG? My guess: 2002 as the serial number starts with 02.
