Had an epic weekend w/2 daytime shows, one on each day (hey they coulda both been on the same day, it could happen), with 2 different bands. Saturday was First Things First, the church band. I played my first outside-church band gig with Mary, the new (to me) Casino that the band members (and our pastors, from what I'm hearing third hand) bought me as an early birthday present. The wiring is currently trashed, basically all there is is a master volume with both pickups on all the time. So I stuck an extra pedal in the signal chain to get a different lead tone, worked fine. Also one of the band members bought wireless units for us to use out of his own money (I'ma buy the one for me off him eventually), so that was cool, no probs w/that.

Only snafu was that last band asked me up to do 8 bars on their closer and hadn't told me it'd be the intro, so guitar vol was way too low. But better too low than too loud!

Will post a buncha pics from this first show, at the Bo Diddley Plaza downtown, then some verbiage about the second show on Sunday and pics from that. As usual, all questions gladly answered, and your gibes at my poseritude are highly encouraged!

That looks like a load of fun Brian.

Who took all the pictures? They're pretty good ones.

Also, I think the wireless is a great idea for anyone that moves around much on stage. I'm not as active as you Brian, but I move around more than enough to warrant a wireless.

I've heard great reports about the Line 6 digital G30 and G50 units.

Thanks fellers!

Mapka, I was a little concerned about feedback with it being a full hollow w/P-90's, I use the Vox setting on the Super Champ XD and had the gain dimed, but no probs. I'ma play her at my birthday show (since she was a pressie, I kinda hafta!) with Crash Pad in a fortnight or so, and that'll be the real feedback test. In that band I use a 50W Sovtek head with the gain dimed, into a 4x12. I'll bring along my LP just in case.

;)

Most of the above pics (the ones w/the deeper colors) were taken by our very own fellow fretter Warren! Not sure who was taking the others, various and sundry folks from our church/friends I'm guessing.

I commandeered the wireless for the following show and made even better use of it!

That Line 6 puts out a lot of sound. I'm sure it's capable of actually sounding a lot better than what our lead singer gets out of it in fact, he's a bit of a novice on electric but to date it hasn't been a big enough deal for me to help tweak it.

Have to admit Krash, I'm disappointed that there are no pics of you taking a "screaming solo" while perched on that wall (pics 1 & 5 of the first group of pics) in front of you. I figured with the weight loss you had, that would be an easy jump.

You mean jump down to the field level? I did that at our last Crash Pad show there at Bo Diidley, but not Sat. w/FtF. I did step up on that little border wall and stand at the foot of the stage, but I'm not immediately finding any pics showing it.

Day Two: Crash Pad at the Florida Theater, benefit for community recreation for the differently-abled

We had a good slot, 4th out of 7 bands. Load-in 1:30. Our slot originally at 5:45 but they got about 15 or so minutes behind. Set kicked pretty hard. I was wearing a "load-in/set-up" t-shirt over my gig shirt and forgot to take it off for the first couple songs, haha. So that's why you'll see a black sleeved T in some pics and a sleevelees white one in others.

A couple small cockups but nothing major, worst for me was switching around the lyrics a bit on our newest song; this was the first time the band's ever played "Hey Trayvon" in public and there was some concern over how it would be received, but people seemed to like it. It is very very poppy (other than my vocal rasp) so that is a good juxtaposition to the fairly heavy lyric. The closer, whom I'd hardly ever heard of, kicked *ss and took names. We plan on doing some gigs totgether, we both dug each other's sets and are coming from roughly similar places musically and going for high-energy stage shows.

Without further ado, Crash Pad:

1 Geez Krash...you look GREAT. Definitely ready to give Veins Renman a
run (pardon the pun) for his money.

2 I dig the shape of the Firebird inspired bass. I have a lap steel shaped like that.

Thanks; my weight loss is sorta the "silver lining" of the whole throat cancer thing.

The bass is a Thunderbird. Sfaik they've been around as long as Firebird guitars. It's kinda funny how Joel, our bassist, came by his. I have a brown sunburst one, which I lent him for playing in Crash Pad back when he didn't have one. He liked it so much he got himself the silverburst one.

They are cool.

;)

WOW!! You have quite the limber lower back and knees (pic #1 of last group of pics). Do you do anything specific (stretches , yoga, etc) to stay that limber in between shows? OR....are you one of those "freaks" who just happens to be that limber without doing anything? lol

Naw, I don't do nuthin' special. Back in the day I used to be a footballer (soccer player) for years, maybe that helped keep my knees limber, although actually I guess that could've put more wear and tear on them than usual. In fact, my left knee was rebuilt back the '80's from a soccer injury, torn anterior cruciate ligament. I think it's just an adrenaline thing. It just happens, there are a couple songs that are sort of built around the concept of having a couple spots in them where "here's where Brian goes apesh*t" and I get pumped up and just go for it.

I figure I better do that now while I still can, haha!

Mmmmm, . . . adrenaline . . . . yummmy!

One of the reasons I like old schoolish punkish stuff. Up tempo, makes you bounce up and down (what basically amounts to dancing for me), and gets the blood up!

Do ya think Crash Pad will do a webcast concert like one I "attended" with you playing with Hoyt and the boys a few years ago? That was a ton of fun. Would be cool to get to see a live show of yours again.

That'd be cool, but I'm techno-challenged. Only reason it happened with the Hotheads was because one of the other bands set it all up and was in charge of it.

By coincidence, our next show is at that same club:

sounds like fun! Dang, I need to hire you a tech director or something. Maybe Warren could figure it out for you. i needs to see me some Crash Pad, but don't want to travel to FLA.
