Dupli-Color Rattle Can's

has anyone re-finished a body using either Dupli-Color or other brands of rattle cans? i have a little touchup gun but it will not spray flake for anything. I was thinking of re-painting an old strat clone body with either Metal Specks http://www.duplicolor.com/training/metalspecks_training.html or Mirage http://www.duplicolor.com/training/mirage_training.html thought it might be a different look... I would probably use my little touch-up gun for the clears since that would take a few coats... suggestions appreciated...

Hello Big K,

I have found this product to be somewhat gummy. I have painted a lot in my life time and found it to be convienent but for some reason it takes a very long time to completely harden and is somewhat gummy until then. Even when totally dry it feels gummy. Just my opinion, I will never use it again on a guitar.

I do hate that tacky feeling, I think I'm better off spraying a solid color, then maybe shoot a clear pearl something? then top coat with a few plain coats of clear....

dang I thought this would be so slick... On second thought I may pick up a cheap sprayer at Harbor Freight with a big nozzle to use for flake...

The problem I always had with larger metal flake paint is getting it covered with clear. You have to put on so much clear to bury the flake that you run the risk of the clear cracking on you later on and not that much later on if you don't let each coat dry at least a day between coats. This will slow things way down if you are using nitro or acyclic lacquer. I used to paint custom motorcycles for a local Harley Shop and for others as well and flake has always been very time consuming and risky.
I just finished putting the last coat of clear on my Jazzmaster body and I have been putting coats on it all winter long. It challenges my patience to the max but I have confidence that it will be a loonngg time before the clear cracks and then it will be cool because it will be well used and worthy of cracking:R
I would suggest looking into what ReRanch has as far as flake and clear, if they offer it. I used their solid color Surf Green on my Chicom Strat and it is not the least bit gummy. Their is always some of the newer poly paints too and there is a lot to choose from in the automotive field. They dry fast and shine like crazy but there is always the debate between nitro and poly.

thanks for the advice..... I have used Guitar ReRanch solid color in the past for a body and it turned out nice... I was just wondering about the stuff the local auto parts stores carry (the website looked like it would work) I think Reranch may get a couple more bucks in the future..

Yeah the auto parts stores are handy but I will not use Duplicolor again on a guitar, my maple neck still has a weird feel from the Duplicolor clear I used. I remember hearing someone else mention this paint as being gummy. You know what, you should do a search here http://www.reranch.com/reranch/ and also here http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php? and see what you come up with for (Duplicolor)? I think it would be worth it.
