Gatton Fix

I have one of his albums and while it's GOOD guitar playing, I wasn't bowled over either. That being said, I saw him subsequently on a PBS special and I just sat there slack-jawed, just in AWE of a MASTER Axe-man. For whatever reason, it didn't carry over to this album.

Contrast that with Roy Buchanan, who sounded scary on albums; then on a PBS show he comes out looking like a Harvard professor and just torched the sky.

Both geniuses died by their own hand. Still, there is a bit of speculation on Buchanan as he allegedly hung himself in a Reston Va jail.

Gatton was such a great player. I have actually listened to and learned a lot of cool tricks from him.

I got turned on to Danny a couple of years back--man, what a talent! It's easy to see why they called him the "Humbler". Just plain scary....

Yup, when you can play with your fretting hand wrapped in a towel... you're something special. I haven't tried but I'm pretty sure I can't pull that off.

Wow, I really like this second clip. The guy really had something.
It really saddens me to think that he took his own life. What is it about some people like this that makes them so sad. Maybe this is part of the thing that drives them to be so expressive with their music.

I had a friend who was like this, very talented and very unhappy. His story ended much better, but when he finally came to terms with it he told me that it took away some of the spark in his music. The unhappiness was part of what drove him in the creative side.

Some of the same issues with Danny were the same as with Roy Buchanan.
Both knew how great they were and both wanted to support their family's by playing music..........they just didn't want all the crap that came with the job including fame and travel.
They didn't want to leave their little area.......Virgina, Maryland, DC.
Both also became very depressed when they lost their major label contracts.

Maybe that was it, just dealing with the frustrations of trying to make a living doing what he loved. I admire anyone who can do music for a living, and enjoy doing it. It's a very tough environment. All too often the well-paying opportunities are not the fulfilling ones.

One of my old guitar instructors used to tell me that he wished that he could make enough money to get out of the music business and just do it for fun.
