We talk a lot about favorite and influential six-stringers. Let's discuss bass players a bit. Whether I am playing bass or guitar, I find that I derive a lot from bass players. Some of my favorites:

Billy Cox [Band of Gypsys]
Phil Lesh [Grateful Dead]
George Porter [The Meters]
Greg Cohen [Tom Waits, Masada, etc.]
Chris Wood [Medeski, Martin & Wood]
Victor Wooten [The Flecktones]
Dee Dee Ramone [The Ramones]
Rick Danko [The Band]
Colin Greenwood [Radiohead]

Rudy Sarzo [Ozzy, Quiet Riot]
Steve Harris [Iron Maiden]
Stu Hamm [solo and with Joe Satriani, et al]
Billy Sheehan [Mr. Big, David Lee Roth band, Niacin]: not so much that I wanted to imitate him, but he showed that it was OK to be a rock bass player and be technically proficient
Every funk bass player ever

I really have to say I don't follow bass players..
But when they are mentioned.. Three famous ones come to mind.

Paul McCartney

Geddy Lee

Sting

I have to admit, I don't specifically follow a lot of bass players, that said, I like:

Mike Dirnt (shows a lot of heart out there playing)
Dee Dee Ramone
Like Marnold said, Funk players
Jazz Players like Stanley Clarke
Sting, Geddy Lee, McCartney, if only for their overall contribution. I don't know enough to rate them as players per se.

I'm embarrassed that I didn't put down Geddy or Les Claypool. Bad former bass player. No biscuit. Claypool's bass line on their cover of "NIB" is to die for.

Jonas Reingold (Flower Kings)
Jonas Helborg (John McLaughlin)
Paul McCartney
Chris Squire
Tony Franklin (Blue Murder, The Firm)
Randy George (Neal Morse)
Dee Murray (Elton John)

It's ok, I forgot to include Michael Henderson [Miles Davis/Stevie Wonder] and Donald "Duck" Dunn [Stax house band/The MG's] on my list. It's funny how as soon as you hit "submit" you realize who you left out.

Geddy, gotta have Geddy in there somewhere
Victor Wooten
Gary Lowe (Big Sugar)

And this guy was probably the first musician, and bass player in particular, that made me sit up and go WOW! :Dude:

Kasim Sulton: Utopia, Todd Rundgren, Meatloaf (session player, played on all but one song on the Bat out of Hell album, produced by Rundgren)

Used to listen to a lot of Utopia in the early 80s (cuz nobody else knew who the fk they were :AOK:) and I was amazed at his level of playing while still a teenager.

Dang, forgot Helborg too. :AOK: He's made some incredible albums: a few with Shawn Lane and one with Buckethead.

It's ok, I just realized I forgot Jack Bruce! How could I have done that?

Yeah, shame on me for missing him too. Cream's "Badge" was the first "real" bass line that I ever learned.

Geddy Lee
Mark King
John Entwistle

And for his 'Style and Showmanship' alone, I have to throw in Gene Simmons.
