Hello. My name is Syo. I stumbled upon this forum while seeking information
about Hagstrom Vikings and discovered I liked the energy emanating from your collective spaces.

I have been playing bad guitar (and crumhorn, fiddle, flutes, soft synths, etc.) off and on for over 20 years. I seem to make much faster progress collecting gear than improving my playing, but I seriously enjoy doing both. Mostly banging on Fenders with a few other exceptions.

Music-wise into Richard Thompson, Nick Cave, Radiohead, The Who, Dungen, The Pogues, Jerry Donahue etc, etc...
I am happy to have crossed your paths. Thanks for making some space for me.

Welcome & Bienvennue Syo , enjoy it ..

Welcome syo!!!

I think that you may be our first Japanese Fretter!

Great list of musical interest there!

Crumhorn?!? What is that?

Hello and thanks TOT.
A crumhorn is a curved medieval capped reed instrument that sounds a cross between a bagpipe and a fart. At least it does when I play it...

Apparently, I don't need a crumhorn then. ;)

Welcome Syo, you seem to have figured this place out pretty accurately. I can certainly relate to your statement above.

That crumhorn certainly looks painful.

Welcome to TheFret, syo!:D Glad you joined us here.
There's always space for another, feel free to join in the lively conversations here.
Looking forward to your posts.

No, I think they sound like that for everybody :)

Hello and welcome, Syo.

Welcome Syo! Glad to see you.

Hey, is Yngwie Malmsteen still a god in Japan? He was incredibly popular there in the past at least.

Thanks for the welcome Robert.
Well it's not exactly Yngwie mania nowadays but you can definitely see his influence with some of the Japanese metal bands.

Welcome Syo! I grew up on the other side of the ring of fire in Tacoma near Seattle. It is nice to have someone on the board from Japan!

Welcome Syo :)

Haha I always find it mildly ironic reading Japanese written in English characters :)

Where you at in Japan?

I know a bunch of people in and around Tokyo as a result of friends living there, and me working for a Japanese company. I've visited Kyoto and Hiroshima too, but I do love Tokyo though.

BTW, Syo, I am interested in your avatar. It reminds me of a Japanese children's story/fable we read to our kids, called "The Stonecutter". Could you tell me about it?

I'm living in Himeji which is not too far from Kobe and about 30 minutes to Osaka via shinkansen. City of about 500,000. Most famous for our castle:

There are seven of us (wife, daughter, dog and 3 birds)

My avatar is indeed from cut stone, cut by a Japanese gentleman (my wife's uncle). It is from an inkan (stamp) of the japanese character for my first name (pronounced like the "show" in "showtime"). My Japanese name that is. I am a transplanted barbarian.:D

Krashpad-san konbanwa! (here anyway)
Seems there are lots of Japanese speakers here at the Fret. I've only been around here a few days but it feels just like home;)

Alas, my Japanese is non-existent.

I did know "konichiwa," but then everyone with a copy of "Live at Budokan" knows that! I cheated and looked up "welcome."

My daughter actually knows a little bit of Japanese. She's 15 and very into manga and anime, being a great artist/illustrator herself. It's amazing how much more cross-cultural kids are now, than when I came up. My daughter's ipod is filled with lots of J-rock, a Chinese group called Flower, and even a Romanian pop song (which you do not want to hear, because even without understanding the words, you will be unable to get out of your head!). And she sings along with all of it!

Gaijin, like the rest of us, huh? I traveled to Japan several times on business, many years ago now. Tokyo & Osaka. Would like to go back some time; fascinating country. Plus, I loved the sushi & sashimi! :dude:

Welcome, and don't forget to check Yahoo auctions for musical bargains in Japan.

Hello Suhnton. Tell me, how do you know about Yahoo Auction? Do you live over here too? Yes, it's definitely the Ebay of Japan. Ebay never caught on here.

Well, you'll have to come back for a visit! I am quite comfortable with life here. I travel (China, US, Europe) about 2 months out of the year and enjoy getting out into the world too, but I always look forward to coming back home.

Yes, I'm in The Big Smoke (Tokyo), been here for quite a few years now.

Well, nice to know that there's someone else in my time zone. If you don't mind, what part of Tokyo is home to you?
