Gibson is turning up to ELEVEN...

On Friday, Gibson made it clear that it's after any guitar-playing game, as it added MTV, Harmonix, and Electronic Arts to the list of plaintiffs. MTV, which acquired Guitar Hero developer Harmonix in 2006, uses EA as the distributor for its Rock Band game. Rock Band, a Guitar Hero competitor that was released last November, allows players to team up on vocals, bass, and drums in addition to guitar.

Sometimes I wonder....

This does not appear to be an attempt to sell a direct copy of any Gibson guitar for which they hold trademark rights. These are games that depict the use of what would cleary seem to be Gibson guitars, but what would be the net effect of this? That some kid who wants to step up from a virtual guitar game to the real thing, would want to own a real Gibson guitar because that's what he associates with the sound and appearance of the virtual guitar? Doesn't this seem like a pretty sweet advertising deal for Gibson? Kid dreams of becoming a rock star. Kid plays a virtual rock star game that uses images and sounds of real Gibson guitars. Kid get severe GAS for a real Gibson to fulfill his fantasy. Kid saves his pennies and buys the tool of a real rock star...a Gibson.

So, what's next for Gibson? Are they going to sue every entity out there that markets film of rock concerts because the participants used Gibson guitars? Oh, wait a minute. They wouldn't want to do that, would they? That's free advertisement for their product...isn't it? I'm confused here...

Obviously I'm oversimplifying this issue here...or am I?

...mumblemumblemumble...

Thinking about writing a letter to Gibson. This is stupid of them. Don't they realize what a benefit Guitar Hero and Rockband are to music in general and the hobby of guitar playing specifically?

Simple - greed conquers all... :punch: :(

(Thanks a lot, Gibson!) :flamemad:

And Gibson certainly does not own the monopoly on greed. It's corporate boardroom brinkmanship, and it goes on every day with more corporations than just Gibson.

We need to quit supporting (buying from) corporate America. That's what I do. I don't support the really big guys as often as I can. There is no other way to keep those monsters in check than to take away some of their power.

Check out the Washburn Idols as reasonable alternatives to LP's. :AOK:

Yep, you can get one of these in the $500-$600 range.

I love mine too, Kodiak. But if you want even more of a LP beater, look at the 68's, 70's and Pilsen's. They're all AWESOME! :dude:

I'd love to get a Pilsen Idol sometime. I've heard about how good they are. Beautiful, too.

Its kinda funny, I'm getting that Gibson Custom USA ad with Slash's signature at the top of my screen as I'm reading this ad.

As Carl Childers on the John Boy and Billy Big Show would say, "Funny ha ha or funny queer?" :poke:
