Im gonna call BS! I tried Snopes but didnt turn anything up...but I dont like this story. 359 lbs??? Try and catch a hungry/angry 359 lb man with a fishing pole...a fish is stronger. Second, here in Florida(it may be different elsewhere) its illegal to keep any redfish over 36 inches, I know this is a rainbow trout, but certainly theyve restrictions too.
Third, what kinda hook/bait did he use? I mean did he set out to catch such a beast?
I call BS! The more I think about it the less believable it is...I know, I see the pic, and it doesnt really appear to be chopped...but its still not believable.

A friend sent an e-mail containing photos of a Louisiana record setting 359.1 lbs warsaw grouper. The internet has a number of reports on the catch and I reproduce it here for my fishing buddies, even though it is not an “Oregon trophy”.
A medical student who blindfolds his friends to keep his favorite offshore fishing spot secret has come up with a record-beating fish - a warsaw grouper weighing 359.1 pounds. The giant hauled in by J.J. Tabor of Thibodaux is 12 ounces above the previous Louisiana state record, a state biologist confirmed. It’s been cut down to fillets. The first fillet weighed 53 pounds, Tabor said.
He caught it near an oil rig 70 miles south of Fourchon, in 400 feet of water. He won’t give a more specific description.
It’s J.J.’s secret,” said Joey Rodrigue, a friend from Baton Rouge who joined Tabor and Tabor’s father, John, on the record-making trip Saturday. “I don’t even know where I was. He blindfolds us on the way out.”
Tabor said he thought at first that his hook with a live hardtail on it had it the bottom “until I felt the big head shake.”
Rodrigue steered away from the rig.
“I put myself in a harness and just had to lay back and fight,” J.J. Tabor said. “It was about a 15 or 20 minute fight.”
Tabor cleaned the fish late Monday afternoon outside his father’s auto repair shop in Thibodaux. “We’ll split it up,” he said. “I’ll make some phone calls and try to get rid of it fresh. The rest, we’ll vacuum pack it and cook it later.”
Tabor says he believes the fish is about 33 years old. He plans to send an inner-ear bone called the otolith to a university in Florida where researchers can help determine the age of the fish. There are a couple of species in the grouper family that get HUGE!!! Warsaw Groupers are one of them. Goliath Groupers, a'ka Jewfish, is another species that get really big. Not sure of the record, but I think it's in the 600 plus pound range.
I've seen lots of groupers while snorkeling/spearfishing in the Bahamas. Largest I've seen laneded via spear was maybe 40 lbs and that fish was huge. Can't imagine something 10-15 times that size.

The thing is that whatever anybody posts someone can come along and say that it's BS but if they do then they need to be able to provide credible evidence that it is indeed BS and not just because they say so.

OK, so why is a 359.1 lb. Warsaw Grouper so hard to believe when the IGFA world record is 436 pounds, 12 ounces?
That's just over 77 pounds bigger.
The IGFA record Jewfish, a.k.a. Goliath Grouper is 680 pounds. When I worked at the local nuclear power plant back in the 70's, a Jewfish found it's way into the intake canal where it died. It took a cherry picker (large telescoping boom crane) to lift it out of the water. It was over 400 pounds. I saw it close up with my own eyes, and it was easily bigger than the 359.1 pound grouper in this story.
These fish do get that big.

i took the kids to the aquarium in tampa, fl last summer and there were some grouper there that were six feet long and looked to be about three feet wide....one of the kids favorite things about the aquarium!....those guys were huge
the sign did mention that at that size they weren't really good to eat anymore....
