I always look at the hollow body Gretsch guitars when I am at the local music shop. Today I happened to notice the Gretsch guitars with the painted fake F'holes - damn that is a turn-off. That's like painting a third pup on a two pup guitar. If anyone owns one, I don't mean to offend, but it really doesn't do the guitar justice. If I had one, I would be taking it to Earl Scheib for a paint job.

oh... uhhh nm.

Had to go to the site to find out what an F-hole was. It's now clear to me and there's no misunderstanding at all.

Hey it is a Gretch they do what they want

Yeah, I give Gretsch a pass on this'un.

But, that said, if I was gonna get a semi/hollow, it'd either have real f-holes or not. So the fake-hole'd one would be way down on my list.

I'm gonna paint fake f-holes on my amphs. :rotflmao::messedup::rotflmao:

Maybe I'll put them on my pedals too. ;)

Are you talking about the new limited release Chet Atkins G6120-CGP stereo guitar with, "closed simulated f-hole inlays"?

There are others with the fake-holes painted in black to look more like real holes.

I totally agree on the fake f-holes, whats next ,painted on pickguard?

To me it just doesn't make sense, especially with the Gretsch name. To me the $100 and less guitar it is acceptable (not desirable), but a Gretsch????
I think Gretsch first did it a long time ago. They removed the f-holes due to feedback issues but thought that people would think it looked strange without them.

In my opinion, it is part of what makes Gretsch style: retro cool combined with a whole pile of cheeze whiz (see your above reference to the G brand.)

The White Falcon looks like a tribute to Liberace. It so over the top that it becomes cool.

So my answer is that the fake-holes are pure Gretsch.

Black or orange, or sunburst Electromactic. That is the style Gretsch for me. Clean and vintage, and sweet tones. One day maybe. Oh, and they have real f holes.

Yep, at least about 46 years ago...
George with a '62-'63 6119 Tennesean

But it looks like they're not painted on his 1st '62 6122 Country Gentleman..or is one peeking out from under his right arm? And has the lower one been painted over?

Hard to tell on his 2nd Country Gent, in this close-up from a shot taken on 2/12/64 in NYC...shadows covering them up? or what?

They DID paint them on in the mid-60's Country Gent; Andy Babiuk, in his book Beatles Gear, uses a pic of one with the painted f-holes, but states it's 'similar to George's'. I know because I looked forlornly at one many times at a music store in NYC in 1965 or 66; even then, the guitar listed for about $1 Grand, and the White Falcon was about $2-300 more... when a new Gibson ES345 listed at about $450 or so :thwap:

The latest version, G6122 has them

So, I'd concur with Tot...
So my answer is that the fake-holes are pure Gretsch.
