Guitar and air travel?

What is the scoop on traveling by air with a guitar + case...

- within the domestic U.S.?
- overseas?

Potential problems, limitations, etc

EDIT 1: I removed customs -not a problem, at least in my specific case, so to speak.

EDIT 2: I am told elsewhere that I should not really bother and buy locally. I was planning on taking a lowly specimen, so that may well apply... Deeaa, got somethin' to sell (in a few months):hungry?

Replying to my own post to say that an obvious solution for a solid- body bolt-on is to take it apart, as sometimes done for the purpose of secure shipping. Problem solved.
