Open G tuning was and is the secret for that cool ZZ Top/Lynryd Skynyrd southern rock slide sound.

Now all I need is to convince my wife into letting me buy a guitar that I can put on a slide nut and use it just for playing slide.

Open G is a riddiculously fun tuning, both for slide and for non-slide playing. Another open tuning that I find makes slide a lot of fun is Open E [the Derek Trucks tuning].

I bought a really cheap $70 Squier Strat off of e bay to use as a slide guitar. I raised the action at the bridge enough that the slide works great and I can still fret strings if I need to.

Open G is the tuning I use for this guitar.
