help with the modes.....

hey guys, ive been playing for 3-4 years and all i knew was the pentatonic scale and really have mastered it and recently got bored with it and i rarely picked up my guitar, until recently i learned about modes, dorian, lyoidan, etc. ive been working on them, but could someone explain to me how do you connect them into solos, or how do they, or your basic thought how you to put these modes to work.
