British news source The Guardian has reported that Jim Marshall, inventor of amplifiers that became icons of rock and roll, has died at 88.According to the Guardian, it was at Who guitarist Pete Townshend’s request that Marshall, then the proprietor of a west London music shop devised a setup with a head unit containing a hi-powered amplifier and separate cabinets containing the speakers. The Marshall “stack” was soon associated with acts such as Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix, and Marshall himself became known as “the Father of Loud.”As the Guardian story notes, “Virtually every major guitarist has used Marshall amps at one time or another, and giant arrays of Marshall cabs – often suggested to be empty boxes, with no actual amplification purposes – have become key stage props for generations of metal bands, especially.”A statement at the Marshall Ampswebsite read, in part, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved founder and leader for the past 50 years, Jim Marshall. While mourning the Guv’nor though, we also salute a legendary man who led a full and truly remarkable life."

Thanks for the years Jim.

RIP, Mr. Marshall. He looks like a nice grand dad here.

RIP Mr. Marshall.

I looks like he had a very full and productive life. Definitely had a huge impact on music.

I've always loved this picture of him and Kerry King.

Rock would sound a whole lot different without Marshall. I love my Jet City, but the circuit is basically a hot-rodded Marshall circuit.

RIP Mr. Marshall

Thanks for making this guy sound the way he did. It's one of the most influential sounds in my brain.

RIP, Jim indeed. Probably did more for guitarists than any other drummer I can think of.
