While on a 3 day hike above timberline in the White Mountains of NH, back in my college days, 3 of us were caught by surprise in a raging electrical storm. The winds were ripping and the hail stones felt like pellets fired from an air rifle. We all made it out alive, but it was a pretty scary situation. When the hair on my arms stood up from all the charge in the air I actually had a moment when I went from sheer terror thinking I was about to die to total calm and I saw a fast motion mental movie of my life and all the people that had been of real importance.
There was a hiker killed by lightning later that same month on the same peak we were on.
