More crappy gig pics!

From Friday night with Hoyt and the Hotheads. Our bassist was out of town so I played bass. As usual our other guitarist Chet hid over on sidestage and the photog (drummer's gal) didn't get any decent pics of him. By crappy I mean the pics, not the gig. We played on one no-drummer practice, so it could've been a train wreck, particularly given that I'm not the regular bassist anymore.

I look particularly poopy in these, but what the heck.

As usual your comments on my poseritude are encouraged and all questions gladly answered.

A bud of mine who is actually a good photographer was there with his digital camera as well, so maybe later in the week I can augment these with some good shots from a good cam.

Yeah, but since they're all originals, with one extremely obscure cover (song by a guy called Dan Bern), it probably wouldn't mean much.

We keep telling our rookie singer that there will never be a perfect gig. There will always be issues to work around and cats to herd. The good bands work through it all and pull it off - making it look effortless.

Thanks, and that's so true about shows. I used to obsess over stuff, but that was a long time and a lot of shows ago. I don't sweat stuff anymore, just go for it and see what happens, that's the fun! As far as filling in on bass, I have a bit of a leg up, as I was the original bassist in the band in it's original composition, so all my cheats for that band (I'm a great believer in cheat sheets) were actually written with my bass arrangement notations on them. The original lead guitarist was an unreliable drunk (as opposed to myself, a reliable drunk) so the lead singer fired him and asked me to move over to guitar. We had a succession of different bassists after that, and the other lead guitarist is a friend/former bandmate of the drummer's who is a recnet addition.

The 5-piece format allows us to play in at least 4 different configurations, depending on who is available: 5-piece (me splitting leads w/other guy), 4-piece (me on bass), 4-piece (me on lead), and trio (me on bass).

The originals we do in the Hotheads are all written by Hoyt. Given that I've sorta put Crash Pad (the punk rock and roll band I use to do my originals) on an undefined hiatus, we may work a couple of my songs into the setlist. Specifically, Hoyt has mentioned doing a Crash Pad song called "Don't Try This At Home" (basically about TV and it's effect on culture or lack thereof), which would be a good match since it's basically a country-folk type of song rather than a punk song (we put it on the Crash Pad CD just to break things up, and had the recording engineer/co-producer put a harp solo on it-- Hoyt plays harmonica as well). Another possibility from my stable is called "Never Been A River," which is my way of poking fun at people with "hippy names," and was inspired by the Phoenix acting/musician clan, who live nearby, reportedly in one of those sterotypical hippy compounds where folks run around nekkid half the time. I should point out that it was written before River Phoenix's tragic OD death several years ago.

Yeah, I get the Elvis C./Buddy Holly thing a lot. Which is fine, because I really like both as artists.
