Hey friends,

I have told one of my old Fender colleagues about my plans of buying an original Gibson LP and he said I should definitely check what Gregor Hilden (Great player, collector and trader for Gibson stuff) has to offer. Gregor lives only 45 minutes away from me and he is well known for being THE specialist for Les Pauls in Germany, he himself owns an original 59 Paula and hundreds of other cool guitars. After checking his site and what he offers I figured there are two Les Pauls that he bought in the USA that cost about 1000€ (ca. 1300USD) less than the Historic Gold Top and I think they sound very very good. Gregor really picks out only the outstanding sounding instruments.

What do you guys think of these two guitars? I really dig the sound of them.

Jimi: He doesn't mention the pickups in the standard so I will assume they are the stock pickups. The Classic Plus has the Pafs in it and it sounds a little nicer.
He also doesn't mention what year it is so I am assuming it was a little later, I am not sure what years they made the classic plus.
I think they are both pre chambered so they will be solid mahogany and quite heavy.
They both command a similar price over here, but I would probably go for the Standard because of the inlays. It is cosmetic but I am not a big fan of the yellow inlays on a cherryburst guitar.
Using different amps can skewe the comparison as well. But they both look in excellent condition.
Either guitar would probably be great, I have a 1997 Standard, and it is heavy but sounds amazing. Stock pickups and just a sweet guitar.
They really seem like very good buys.

Only one way to find out - go lay hands on those guitars and experience them in person. Feel and playabily are just as important as sound.

Great looking guitars and the clips were cool - the man has some good chops. :D

Thank you so much for your input here! From what you can hear in the video I also do like the Standard better. I will be in Cologne this Friday where I have an offer for a 58 Plain Top VOS and another 57 Gold Top.

:AOK:

One thing I forgot to mention, is the thickness of the necks. The Classic will have a 60s slim taper neck, and the 58s will be pretty fat. I would try them for sure. Some people absolutely hate the 58 thick necks. The standard is somewhere in between and I find them quite acceptable. I do like the 60s neck though.

This friday I will check out two more GTs and 1958 plain tops. I will report of course.
