My wife has issued a fatwah on our old kitchen. It's history. I just gutted it:

The new cabinets arrive Wednesday, and I still have all of the electrical and sheet rock work to do before they go in. Then I have a floor, appliances, a Corian countertop, and tile backsplash to do...........................

Somebody shoot me................................:rotflmao:

Heh, heh, I love DYI projects Plank. And it looks to me like you've got one helluva start there brother. I can't believe you got all that done in one day.

big project there man.

my uncle started to refurb his kitchin, then got lazy and hired an eastern european company to do it for him.

atleast you got the heavy work of ripping it out done.

were just doing alot of painting. we painted the walls, now were gonna paint the cabinets. a little rearranging of the appliances, new tile floor and voila. new kitchen. I dont have the skill or the time to do a full scale remodel. kudos to you though.

That wiring looks old. You replacing all of that? We had to do a very similar remodel on our kitchen. We purchased unfinished cabinets and sanded/stained/urethaned/hung them. Our house is super old so nothing is square. I bet real carpenters cringe when they see the remodel work we've done, but hey, nothing beats working on your own house.

Our kitchen is about 95% finished, heh. WIsh I had the skillz to do corian.

We just re-did the kitchen, along with some other expansion. It is nice, but sucked up most all free time this past summer. We really did enjoy it over the holidays though. Pics:

I'm replacing the electric - all of it..........................new boxes, wiring, outlets, and switches. I'm adding low voltage under cabinet lighting, and recessed ceiling lights.

This is a big project. I'm already into it for over $11K.........................

Very impressive Plank. Mrs. Keel and I are about to undertake a much more modest kitchen project. Paint the cabinets is the DIY part. New counter tops we're going to hire out. Still trying to decide re: materials and colour. Leading the pack is quartz (Silestone). We also looked at stainless steel, but the cost, 3 times quartz/granite, was a deal breaker.

It was beyond confusing initially when we first started planning the kitchen. The options are mind boggling, but the cost brings you into the reality zone quickly. That said, I told my wife "in for a penny, in for a pound..........If we're going to do it, do it right"...........and we still made compromises.

We're getting Corian counter tops and all new stainless refridgerator, range and dish washer...................I only want to do this once........

My cabinets arrived today and they are gorgeous - natural hickory. They're currently stacked in the living room all the way to the ceiling.

Oh man. HIckory....awesome!

I have a few slabs of hickory....that stuff is so hard...it bogs my planer down so easily.

Yikes!!! That is one big OL' pile of cabinets.

Hickory looks great. :applause :AOK

One big step completed - the electrical work is done. We replaced a lot of old Romex. Every outlet in the kitchen is now GFCI protected. The recessed celing lights are installed. The wiring for the low voltage cabinet lighting is run.........and everything works. :dude

Next weekend is dry wall installation. Once that is done, I'll schedule the cabinet installation and get the painting done in the meantime.

LOTS of progress in this project.................and I'm aging in dog years seeing it through........................:)

Cabinets are up!

New Kitchen

We didn't go for a new kitchen (it has only been 24 years here) but we did put in granite counter tops, a tile backsplash, and a few new appliances. Yes, the colors are earth tones just like my guitars. I hoped my wife would be pleased for years. Of course, I was wrong. We are now working to finish off the basement (after we deal with a literal ton of stuff). I have to admit, it is great to see and use the new kitchen. Maybe I will get a little place of my own in the basement!

Good work there, Plank!

We're about to begin the dreaded "kitchen remodel" this spring. I certainly can, and have done this before myself, but I'm not about to give up a bunch of my vacation time just to work on this project. I'll design it, but we'll have someone else do the work.

My wife wants to tile almost all of the house as part of this project. Half of the house is already tile and she wants to replace it with new tile and extend it throughout the rest of the house (which would be quite expensive). I want wood floors (or possibly Pergo), so the great debate is on.

This is going to get really interesting....

Thanks, folks!

Peachhead,

The cabinets are Shenandoah in "natural hickory" and I bought them at Lowes. I have a thing for natural wood.

Bloozcat,

This project has been a huge learning experience on the dos and don'ts of kitchen remodelling. Some of my goofs were minor, others had to be reworked in a pinch. :rotflmao:

We're waiting on our countertop now. Once it's installed, I press on with the tile backsplash.

I'm facing remodelling creep here myself with my wife....................

"Now that the kitchen is done, we need to do............." :help

I know exactly what you mean, Plank!

The third house remodeling I did was like this. The first two were reasonably extensive but without many surprises. But the third one, was the house from hell. There wasn't a level floor or ceiling in any room nor a plumb wall to be found throughout the house. I ordered kitchen cabinets in natural oak and had to remove large sections of the walls to fit them. To make it worse, the walls were plastered about 2" thick. And that was only one of the problems...

I swear, that after about the seventh nightmare on that project I could hear the house whispering....GET OUT...!

sounds like my house. I love it, but sheeesh. :nope

Countertops are finally in! The order got screwed up and we waited over two weeks for them. I need to engineer the sink drain and I absolutely detest plumbing.......water has a way of running amok regardless of the best laid plans.............:thwap

I have a porcelain tile back splash going up this weekend that will run the length of the cabinets on both walls.

Almost home! :happy

I love that under mount sink....very nice Plank. PS...I will be in touch very soon for those pups. :-)

Thanks, Kazz. It's Corian and glued right to the bottom of the counter - no seams.

Your pickups are safe and secure awaiting you.
