P90 Pickup question

I have a guitar with 3 P90 pickups. It sounds OK, but the neck pickup is kind of muddy. Can I install just 1 pickup in the neck position and not the others? Will this affect tone adversely? Should I just leave it on neck pickup after installation? :thwap:

The tone of P90s can vary significantly depending on their height; you might consider experimenting with that before you break out the soldering iron. But trading out one P90 for another shouldn't be a problem. What kind of guitar do you have?
