I've rigged my pedalboard rather unconventionally, to counter some real-life annoyances I've battled over the years. Maybe someone gets some good ideas from what I've done with mine. See, my main gripe with any effect is I hate buttons...I sing while I play and have to switch sounds and parts while singing so I can't be looking down and need a minimum of switches and such.
I'm using a pan pedal to switch/pan between my amp channels, i.e. rather clean to quite driven. Then I have a compressor pedal inserted inside the end of the pan pedal as you see, and a spring holding the pan pedal just over the pedal switch. That way, rather like with a wah, I can engage and disengage the compressor by pressing the pedal just a tad further. So No need for any extra buttons, just a simple 'gas' pedal for more and more drive and at the very end a lead boost with a compressor to top it off.
This idea I came accross on the net:
Simply remove the pedal baseplate screws and put a bicycle chain link, screw back...very handy for quick fastening on wood and completely reversible too. Holds the pedals extremely securely too, can be thrown around no problem.
Third idea I use is this:
For putting pedals like the tuner here behind the 1st row, I just use those 15mm PVC water pipe end reinforcers as spacers. They lift the pedals just to the right height plus they allow for cords to run below nicely. And still they are very sturdy a base, no problem stepping on.
Finally, here's a top view...I made the board to fit snugly inside a cheap aluminum 'tool-briefcase' or whatchamacallem...and also sliced the corner off because that way the board fits snugly against the mic stand feet and will be in the same position every time. These boxes come with fake leather tool holder as well, which helps keep the board down in transit, and turned inside-out (facing inside the cover, not towards the pedals), also provides nice pockets where one can keep spare tubes, tools, batteries, torch etc.
