I remember the 80's and how much I wanted one of these Steve Vai Jem 777 Swirl guitars, but they were way too expensive.
Found this great video here on how to make the swirl on a guitar (yes he's goint to put a guitar body in later...).
Maybe I should buy a used Ibanez RG or Jem and try it out
