The Bold Ones

Forgive my ignorance, but could someone please explain to me why some fretters have bolded characters for their names and others do not?

I've been trying to figure it out for sometime. My thinking:

1). Are bold people, those who have tons of posts?
No. While many mega posters are indeed bold I found plenty of exceptions.

2). Are bold people moderators?
Yes, but there are plenty of them who aren't.

3). Is boldface used to point out the Canadians?
No again. I found that bold fretters come from many lands and even one from another galaxy (tOt).

Finally figured I'd give up and ask and then today noticed that I am suddenly bold too! It kind of creeped me out to have emphasis added to me for reasons I do not understand. So could someone please let me in on this one?

Eh?! I forgot I donated! But that was like two months ago and I've only just gotten bolder. So does my boldness need to be renewed or does my one time donation make me bold for life?
