The Grunge thread kind of inspired me to start a metal thread, just to post examples of the kind of metal I like. If you don't like it, I will not be offended. This is mainly so people can see where I'm coming from musically and maybe help broaden horizons.

First of all, my hero, George Lynch albeit with a bit too much reverb/delay, playing "Mr. Scary"


My favorite Judas Priest song: "The Sentinel" (live)


Iron Maiden "The Trooper" (live)


Ozzy's "Crazy Train" (yeah, it's cliche, but Randy still rules--best solo of the 80s)


Metallica "Master of Puppets"


Megadeth "Peace Sells"


Anthrax and Public Enemy "Bring the Noise"


Savatage "Hall of the Mountain King" (cheesy video, awesome tune)


The late Ronnie James Dio "King of Rock and Roll" (live)


Queensryche "Queen of the Reich" (yes, the video redefines "cheese," but it's the song, man)


And now for some shred: Yngie J. Malmsteen "Trilogy Suite Op. 5"


Newer shred/power metal: Dragonforce "Through the Fire and Flames"


3 Inches of Blood "Deadly Sinners"
 
High On Fire is one of my favorite modern metal acts. Matt Pike is a beast on his custom 9 string (G, B, high E are doubled like a 12 string). A bit of Lemmy/Motorhead-like vocals with some serious stoner ground metal, but faster.

Opeth can get a bit harsh, but I love their complex, "prog" metal.
However, when they play clean, melodic acoustic, it can be jaw dropping.



 
I think my tastes in metal are very similar to the Rev's, although there's some stuff there that I have to check out. Like Doug, I also really dig Mastodon. Black Label Society, Black Stone Cherry, Alabama Thunderpussy, and these guys from the NW, VALIS...



Former member of Screaming Trees, Van Conner is the singer/guitar player. Van is a really nice guy, and very approachable. He does like his Crown Royal, though...long story.
 
Deftones (alt metal)
Diamond Eyes is the latest release, and has quite a range of musical styles. Not as dreary or long as in the past. The songs are accessible for any lover of metal, including those who like mostly the classic metal of the past.

Only one video released so far...



Still like their past music, dreary as it is...

It was on the Heavy Metal movie album soundtrack, ironically, most of which wasn't metal. :thwap

At the time I believe my brother and I had every Black Sabbath album available at the time (circa 1985).

Saxon and Motorhead certainly both qualify, yes.

The only metal thing I'm not a fan of is the Cookie Monster thing. I realize that 3 Inches of Blood has some of that, but they also have someone who can sing.
 
A couple of bands I came into contact with via Brutal Legend:

Angel Witch "Angel Witch" They came over to the U.S. with Maiden but fell apart.


Brocas Helm "Cry of the Banshee" Some SWEET bass on this one.


And what would a metal compilation be without Manowar? How about "Die for Metal"? All of their lyrics are all about how metal is totally awesome and you better like metal otherwise you aren't metal.


Or how about Samson "Vice Versa" with a pre-Maiden Bruce Dickinson when he was inexplicably known as Bruce Bruce, not to mention the masked "Thunderstick" on drums.
 
I love METAL!!!

A video of Ozzy with Jake E. Lee on guitar and a tape of Metallica's Master Of Puppets made me wanna play the guitar. I've heard all sutff of Metal beofre from Priest to Def Leppard, but Ozzy and Metallica really pushed the button!

Cool. I read that book, but I can't say I understood it. Even after reading the Wikipedia article. ;)
 


Outside of Rhoads, Jake E. Lee was my next favorite.




My all time favorite Queensryche song.



My second favorite instrumental, after Mr. Scary.
 
Good calls all there, Kat. Have you heard/seen the Shadows Fall cover of Bark at the Moon? They even did the video to look like the original. I still prefer the original, but this is pretty cool. Even had their drummer imitating Carmine Appice's drumstick twirl (and moustache). Classic.


And I know a lot of Trivium fans hate "Anthem (We Are the Fire)" but I love it in all its scooped glory.

Yep, saw it. I thought it was a great cover, and I dig Jon Donais' playing.

Trivium was a great selection, too.
 
Wow, I got some listening to do. I have heard of some of these guys, and even tried to watch a whole Queensryche DVD at Spud's once. I couldn't get all the way through it though. I could see and appreciate the talent, but it was too dramatic and operatic for me. He showed me some other prog vid I liked better too.

But most of these guys I have not even heard of. I am obviously underinformed. I better listen before I form any opinions. Metal to me mostly meant the Poison, Ratt, Mettalica, Queensryche, Quiot Riot, Stryper thing. That I could mostly do without. And I only mention that as a point of reference for my own taste (Which I continue to try and broaden). I respect anyone's right to prefer this over anything I might like.

The cool thing about metal is that it is extremely varied, and can incoporate elements from just about every genre. Over the years it's been pigeonholed into two main camps: 1. 80s "Hair Metal" and 2. Cookie monster from hell. The good thing about the "metal world's" reaction to grunge is that it splintered into a ton of different sub-genres, where if you have an affinity for a certain type of music, but like it loud, you can find it.
