I've recently got a Tonelab SE (for ONLY 357€!!! ~$480) and I think that is even better than my expectations!!!

I think that it can beat every modulation/delay/reverb pedal that I ever had or still use (I own 15 pedals...) but I was a bit of suspicious about the overdriven sounds that it can produce, or better...recreate.

So, yesterday, I took the BOSS SD-1 Overdrive off my main pedalboard, and tried an A/B test of at home:

I made two identical settings, both on the pedal and the virtual "SD1" of the Tonelab, and recorded the results using my Rockinger guitar, my Pro Jr and an SM57 mic to capture this dry sound on SONAR.

So, I would like you to try and guess which clips have been played using the real SD1 and which ones with the Tonelab SE:

Light Overdrive: (Level=5, Tone=5, Drive=5)High Overdrive: (Level=5, Tone=5, Drive=10)So, let me hear your guesses ;)

Although I already know the answer, I have to say that I was 50% mistaken in my initial estimation (come to think about it, I would statistically have better odds if I just guessed! :D )

Which goes to show how much have "modelers" evolved in recent years.

I trust Vox very much; I had the AD30VT and it's emulations were spot on. ;)

Its really hard to figure that out, but the clip 4 and 1 comes from the Tonelab.. but I am not 100% sure.

Hmmmm we don't have many answers up to now...

Maybe Tonelab doesn't interest many people...

I'll post the answers tomorrow ;)

I think that my post was not so interesting, if I judge by the number of the post...

Anyway the answers are:

Clip 1 = Tonelab
Clip 2 = SD-1

Clip 3= SD-1
Clip 4 = Tonelab

;)

Wohoo... 100% correct! :)

SuperSwede, I would like to know how did you find the clips:

Did you hear a specific difference?
Did you guess?

Do you believe that the differnece is so audible?

Well, I´ve had a Tonelab for a while now so I thought that I recognized the sound in those two clips. The difference is not that big, but I would say that I like the emulated drive slightly more.

You did good Elavd! The built in stomps are really good!
Have you hooked the TL up to the computer yet? The editing software is brilliant, but requires midi.

I hope that I won't regret the selling of my pedals...

I didn't connect it yet to the computer

Robert I decided to sell all my pedals because I think that the sounds of the Tonelab is not a compromise at all...

Also I think that now I have more options, more flexibility, more effects etc, and also I don' bother anymore for true bypass pedals, signal loss from the cables, power supply etc ;)

I made my life much easier now...

Look at me before with all my pedals on my feet:

The only downside is that the tonelab doesnt have a solid state model. I really think that they should have included at least the JC-120.

Ahh look at all dem pedals! Purdy with all dem colors! ;)

I understand your point though. Great if it works for you.

I don't think I will ever go the route you're going, but who knows, maybe I'll have to eat my words in a few years time.

The JC-120 is modeled in the PodXT, and it sounds pretty much like the JC-120 that I had earlier. Its not quite as warm as the real thing, but I had a early 80´s JC with well played in speakers. Its a shame that it wasnt included in the tonelab lineup.

If you download this pdf which describes the amps/effects etc that Tonelab simulates, you will see that the "CL CHORUS" effect is the Chorus from
Roland JC-120 ;)

Yah... its that award winning chorus. They should have included the amp sim as well! :)
But just check out that 1x12 tweed model.. man that is a GREAT sound. Possibly the best amp model I´ve ever heard!

The 1x12 is currently my favorite model.

Thanks Elavd, I hadn't seen those pdf's before. Nice format for the info.

I'll check it thoroughly today, but I mainly use the amps, only when I want an overdriven sound.

I prefer the clean sound of my 2 Fender amps, so I let the amp sims off when I need clean sound ;)

The cabinets are constantly off, because I think that they ruin the sound...

Elias you have to record something direct with the TL. ;)

Let me tell you what: bring the TL and one of the guitars when you come to Athens and we shall record something together! :DR
