Why are guitars a "she"?

Seems like everyone refers to guitars as female. You know, "she's a beauty", or, "how much did she cost you", or perhaps "how do you like her"...

Now why is this? I don't ever see anyone come to the forum and start a thread saying, "hey guys, I'm Bill and here's my guitar named Bob. Isn't he a beauty?"

But this may be related to how guys always name things as females (and females name their stuff as males).

Unless you're Russian.. from what I understand, they refer to their ships as "him", unlike the US and UK.

I refer to mine in the feminine gender, but I don't have names for them. I think we call them she because they're pretty, sexy, and we like to put our hands all over them.

You know, I almost put a caveat in there about pets. I routinely ask my husky, Ned, why he can't act like a normal human being.

Sometimes in other languages, like German for instance, nouns are given gender and are referred to with words like der (masculine) die (feminine) das (nuter). I wouldn't be surprised if that is where it originated. I have never referred to my instruments with gender except to describe a Strat as a bit** to play.
