I now grok the sine quibus non of blackface & tweed & am like a bloodhound on the browns but what the heck makes a blonde a blonde?

The tolex colour. Fender used a whitish tolex for a while. In fact they used two different patterns, you'll see smooth and rough blondes mentioned. There's a blonde Bassman piggyback rig early in this video which also shows most of the other Fender cosmetic differences. It gets really tricky when you come across a transitional amp. There's a guy round here who plays a transition Super. Blackface cosmetics with white knobs, Brownface innards, 2x10" speakers, no reverb. Sounds wonderful.

Is there a signature sound to the blondes? Are they mutts?

Need I ask if you like your blondes smooth or rough?
