Oh *****! I like the maple neck SG - 'specially the white and gold ones look great. But that's only me.....I hated the maple neck LP though!

I don't think Gibson is desperate. Selling so many classic models you can easily effort "experiments" like the poop and hole ones. Who knows, maybe there's a classic among them. Who really believed in the success of the Flying V when it entered the market, or the SG? Les Paul hated the SG and wanted his name to be removed from it when it was called Les Paul Special.

When you have the visibility of Gibson, the failures or let's say "not so successful" models are going to be out there and discussed on a lot of forums. If it was Washburn, it wouldn't be discussed much beyond the Washburn forum.

While I can certainly appreciate the laminate process (gunstock manufacturers have being doing this for awhile), I wonder about the bright colors. Mind you, I think it's pretty at first glance, actually reminds me of "the fool" SG, the one Vood mentioned. And therein lies the problem.
I fear it would only be a matter of time until these catch on at every small town country music opry, and would be played by the obligatory fool dressed in clown attire, you know the one, couple teeth blacked out, poor grammar, oversized shoes.
Might be fitting, tho, since Gibson stole Robert's pic.........

most everone hated the explorer when it first came out, so it was originally discontinued and eventually replaced with the firebird, then reissued soon after. But now theyre both considered classic by the majority of gibson fans. I love explorers myself, especially the all-white ones like what joel o'keffe from airbourne has.

the 'zoot suited' SG looks like puke now, but in 50 years it might be the bee'z kneez...right?

Sorry for the thread hijack, but do you guys really depend that much on inlays on the front of the fretboard? The dots on the side of the fretboard are important to me, but I don't really notice the markers on the front. I've always kind of thought they were there for the benefit of guitarists in my audience.

I do, didn't realize until I started playing in dark pubs/clubs but I defo need them, even if it's just for a reassuring glance down every once in a while. I've discussed this on other threads so won't hijack here.

Ibez not to argue brother but this is not accurate as to actual facts on the explorer,but mostly on ones opinion(yours ) They were not very popular because of the radical design and the first ones had a split headstock with the tuners on each side so they did not stay in tune,but only 50+ were first produced in 57-58 so maybe the 50 who bought them atleast liked them:rotflmaothe ones who still have them love them I bet) They were not replaced with the firebird but the F.B was based on the explorer but with rounded points and first neckthrough for gibby I think. Not sure if the model was officially discontinued as they are/ were still being made.I am not certain but the model is being dropped or I think ive heard this :whatever:

Me too. I seldom look at what I play, when I play. Actually sometimes I've noticed that if I start looking at my left hand while playing, I start thinking what comes next and I mess up. Often I can't tell off memory how some song starts etc, but once the drums kick in and I go to the mic the fingers just find their positions. If I look at them they may not.

When I last ordered a custom neck I specifically wanted it w/out the markers because they're totally unnecessary for me.
