So I've pretty much let my hair grow since getting married in March. I had a trim or two along the way, as my neck hair puts me into mullet-ville pretty quickly, but otherwise I haven't touched it.

It was getting to the point of being really scruffy, particularly on the back and sides, so I went in for a haircut today. I told the lady not to touch the hair on top, and that I wanted to keep growing that out. Just tame the back and sides.

Well guess what? I now have considerably less hair on top. Grr. I feel like I just wasted the last 3-4 months of hair growth.

I decided that I'm probably not going back to a barber/salon to get my hair cut. It seems like they really only know how to give one haircut, which is what they give you regardless of what you ask for.

Anybody else have similar frustrations/stories? Luckily hair keeps growing back, huh?

Ya know what they say - nothing lasts longer than a bad haircut.

------------------------------------------------------------------

A man walks into a barber shop and sits in the chair. The barber asks "how do you want your haircut?" the man says "I want it short on one side, uneven on the other side, crooked in the front and a hacked up in the back." The barber said "I don't know if I can do that." The man replied "I don't know why not, that's the haircut you gave me last time."

I'm not just the president of Bad Haircuts for Men, but also a customer! (a parody of an old commercial)

Last month, I got a haircut so bad and uneven, I took out our pet grooming shears and attached the longest length guard and mowed is all down! I liked it so much, I now cut my own hair. I just need a slightly longer guard for the top.

The few times I've found someone who knows how to cut my hair well, they always leave that business and there's no way to find out where they went.

First of all, I'm happy to say that I still have a full head of hair left to cut (and that it's still surprisingly mainly dark brown!).

I've been going to the same woman to have my hair cut for (egad!) 26 years now. My hair is so perfectly straight that's it's difficult to cut without showing every little mistake. The woman who cuts my hair is so good and so consistent that it's almost automatic.

I'm very fortunate...

I've been cutting my own hair for 15 years or so. I haven't paid for a haircut in 20 years. Just think of all that money I save every year...that's a new guitar right there!

I cut my own hair with a hair clipper, as short as I can get.

How'd you think I got three guitars, three amps, two MFX pedals, 3 guitar tab white pages books, several how to books, carrying case, keyboard, etc, etc, etc. :rollover

That's my method, too. The 1/8" comb. Nice and short, so even wearing a hat won't mess it up!

Same here.

Occasionally, I am asked to get a fresh pro cut.

Hate getting my hair cut at barber!
My father learned how to cut hair in the army, and cut my hair throughout my childhood. Going to the barber will always felt odd to me...

And the old places are getting all chi-chi'd up and prices are going up for same old darn thing!

Yep, we remember your haircut back when it was new to you... It was on your first album cover, right? (back before "Ken" became FranKenFretter)
:poke :p

Well...I used to just buzz it, and I would call on various friends to finish off the back, since I couldn't see that. However, I decided I wanted long hair earlier this year, so I let it go.

It's no big deal, just kind of irritating that I spent so much time with shaggy hair in the pursuit of a mane, and she doesn't listen and chops most of it off.

Thanks. I don't think it's bad -- just not at all what I wanted.

Close, but not quite: Hair Cuttery.

Thanks for dredging up that painful memory, Doug. I thought I'd left those days long behind me. I did, however, keep my sweet porno mustache.

Oh, btw...I've met the guy that owns the "Bow chicka wow wow" rights. I'm not kidding. He works for a security company that makes wireless home alarms. One of the programmable alerts is that one - bow chicka wow wow. Sorry to divert the thread, but it seemed apropos, seeing as I'd already mentioned porno mustache. Is this thread going to be deleted now?

Not sure what kind of cut you wanted Eric, but I think it looks quite good, actually. I was trying to picture what it would look like if the top hadn't been touched and the sides were as in the "after" pic.
I, like others, cut my own hair w/ clippers, cut it short, nothing fancy, and use the money I save to buy more guitars/equipment.

When I was 27 & in a punk (sort of) band I blonded my hair totally white for over a year. Then I noticed I was dropping hair like never before, and quit. Alas, after that it's been very thin ever since plus there's certainly a quite thin patch on top as well. Hasn't been getting at least much worse in the past ten or so years, but I'm still constantly thinking about going bald. I hate my thin receding hair.

Ive pretty much cut my own for 15 years or so. I'll use to take a razor blade to it. In my early 20's though I decided I wanted long hair. However when I reached the Ringo look I decided I was going for the Philip Anselmo CFH look. Other wise I was going to shave it. It was going pretty good besides the fact I had to much fun with it. I dyed it about ever 2-3 weeks a diffrent color. Next thing I knew it was shot, blonde and curled into my ears...I looked like a 20 year old Hanson. One morning after work the morning of the company x-mas party. A friend and I hit the liqour store when it opened and by 2pm was toasted. Thats when I decided a mohawk would be cool. A few minutes with the clipper and some egg whites later I had a nice 8-10" mohawk all ready for the company party. Good times, everyone was dressed up in their sunday best and here I am sporting this new look in a complete punk rock attire. I sported that thing for a good while.

Another warning....be carefull going into a tattoo shop with a nice shiny head. I got a gargoyle on the back of my skull after a getting a offer of anything I wanted for the price of set up.

You look the English rocker type with your hair longer, Eric.

More the American punk rock type with shorter hair...

Way back when I thought I was going to be a famous rock musician I had hair down to my shoulders. Sort of like early David Gilmour-ish. It only lasted until my mid twenties though when I started wearing it in a slightly longer cut than Eric's first pic. Hey, it was the 70's. Who didn't look like that?

Today? Typical regular, business type grown-up look....:)

I've been cutting my own hair for a long time. My wife thinks that is a weird thing to do and have occasionally suggested that I get a "real" haircut. I never realized so many of us cut our own hair, I should show her this thread.

Maybe somebody can figure out a way to hook one of these up to an amph. :thumbsup

I usually get like 4 haircuts a year. In between I do it myself. Come summer, I can just shave my head bald or cut it down to a millimetre, let be for the whole summer long, trim it on the sides a few times.

In the wintertime I let it grow a little longer.

In her defense they do have to trim the top slightly to make it blend in with the back and sides. That said....I have not went to a barber since I was old enough to drive. I go to a beautician. Actually I went to our local beauty college for years until I got tired of by the time I got one student trained to cut my hair just right....they graduated and the next time I came in I would have to start over. So I started going to the shop my Grandmother went to....her beautician was only a few years older than I was and as long as I have lived in this area I have only went to her. Now when I was in Oregon, Arizona and Texas I obviously had to use someone else.

I have her trained as to what guards to use and what length to cut the top to. I wear my top at 1 1/2 inches long and the sides I wear what is called a fade cut......where it goes from a number1 guard to no guard with the extension all the way up....and then no guard with the extension all the way down. It is a very clean looking cut. Now go back about 10 years.....and imagine ole Kazz with a very nice and well maintained Mullet......about the length of the guy playing the purple guitar in Tig's post.....I got fed up with the long hair.....and had it all cut off and donated it to "Locks For Love" the program that uses real human hair to make wigs for children with cancer. I once thought about growing it back but when the parts I keep shaved get to be about 1/4 inch or longer I feel like a shaggy dog and have to get it cut immediately. :-)

PS Eric....the new 'do looks good on you bro.......and even tho you are upset with it......its like grass......it will grow back

I gave up on store bought hair cuts about 15 years ago also. I too have a full head of hair and although I occasionally buzz down in the hot weather, most times I keep some length. But it has not always been smooth sailing ~ LOL
I remember one time when I was just getting used to cutting it my self and as I took a swipe the guard fell off the clipper. I had a landing strip like the kid in the picture a few posts back.
