True. My Local GAS Station (we're 90 miles from Anaheim) has been buying his pick of the US Music booth stuff (Washburn, Oscar Schmidt, Randall Amps, etc) every year for about 12 years, and the past couple, has made the same kind of deals with Hoshino (Ibanez, Cort, etc) and Kaman (Ovation, Takamine, LP and TOCA percussion, etc).
And most manufacturers have their 'NAMM Show Special Pricing' deals, as they seek more dealers. Last year, with Fender acquiring Kaman around this time, and already owning Gretsch (Guitars, not drums), he became a Gretsch dealer with what he scored from thier booth to open inventory. He also scored a Schecter dealership, same way.
Before he goes, he takes a 'wish list' from his 'regular' customers (moths drawn to the flame like me who stop in at least once a week) and will try to score. He also gets a few guest passes and doles them out.
Rents a truck and hauls it all back, then has his annual NAMM 50% Off sale. Regular customers know it's coming, like a GAS-O-Mania extension to Christmas. Before he opens the sale to the public, he does a 'preview' for the regulars and tells them what's coming, even calls or e-mails.
And so, I love/hate Winter NAMM.
