Wow! 2 close good games this week. Bummer that neither of my teams won. These were the only 2 games that I've watched all season too. Maybe I should just stick to watching hockey.:thwap

It appeared to me that after taking the lead with :30 to go, the Seattle coaching staff forgot about the existence of the field goal as something to defend against. I couldn't understand why they weren't more aggressive on those plays. It looked like they were just trying to prevent a touchdown, unaware that only up by one, a field goal could still do them in.

There was some coaching in that game that was questionable for sure. Those 4th down plays and lost opportunities in the first quarter hurt too. The D showed they could play Atlanta aggressively the last two series. It was like it was a different defense. I guess that comes down to how the coaches were calling the defensive play.

What beat the Seahawks is the same thing that beat the IGGLES.......a brain-dead coach. Geez, it was like Andy Reid mysteriously showed up in Flacons-Hawks game. Right before the half....2 downs to pick up 1 yard and they don't go to Marshon Lynch.......seriously, is that difficult of a decision?

End of game after the Hawks miraculous recovery......they go for what is essentially an onsides kick......then Carroll, the dope, decides to ice the kicker with a timeout as the Falcons kicker misses the attempt that doesn't count because of the time-out.

My condolences to Seattle as you have a confirmed DOPE runnin' your team. The game is 60 minutes.....not 56.
Sorry, but watching the end was like a bad flashback of so many Iggle games.

After the Packers debacle with the Seahawks earlier, let's just say that there were a lot of people laughing at the time out.

Well, before that time out, allowing the kicker a mulligan :thwap, what I was stunned at was the coverage on deep routes that put them in position. I confess I'm nothing more than a typical fan, what I "know" about football I've learned from untold hours listening to pundits, but wouldn't you flood the deep zone with backs and give them the short dumps, or runs, and take your chances that you can keep them from breaking a run after the catch? Both of those pass receptions, while excellent passes, were to OPEN receivers!!! those receivers should have had 3 guys on them.

sorry to my NW brethren. Carroll may be unconventional or a dope, not my call, but the Seahawks are playing IMPORTANT football year after year, and when's the last time that happened? I think that's great, and Carroll has to deserve a lot of the credit.

I'd have thought so too, but here we are.

While I agree completely that in that yardage situation, smart money says use Lynch, I was more baffled by Carroll going for it on 4th down in the first place at that point in the game.

That is far too early for that kind of desperation. They were only down by 13 and there was more than an entire half of football to be played. Kick the FG and just get on the board.

Yes, Atlanta is an "explosive offense" but Seattle has shown they can score dozens of points in a hurry as well, so what was the urgency?

For all the crap Greg Schiano takes about not giving up when there's only one second on the clock, I'd rather have that than Paranoid Pete thinking ANY play in the first half of ANY game is make or break.

That was a heartbreaking game.

I don't know what was in Pete's head on that timeout, the 4th down, the pass coverage....

I don't think he's quite as bad as Andy Reid, but still, not good.

What gets me is that we have an extremely talented team going into next season, but a coach that can completely blow it at the worst time.

Yep.....been there, felt that. Very frustrating to a fan. Players at least have the "excuse" of being chased/hit in the heat of the play. Yet, coaches would like you to believe that they suffer the same as the players. haha

I think it is a mixed bag with Coach Pete. As Jayson may remember, I was ambivalent at first about Pete as he came out of USC, and I a lifelong Husky fan. But beyond that prejudice, it seems to me he has put together a talented young team, and motivated them to try to do more than people think they can do, and do it for an entire game, even in a game that is not going so well. He also does not seem to be an old school Lombardi type coach, and that seems to work with these young players. So on a macro level, I like what I see.

On a micro level, I do not understand some of the calls from time to time. I hope he can improve that. On the whole, I think the Seahawks are well served by keeping him. But there is room for improvement. I think that is to be expected out of a young, emerging team, including the coaches.

I agree entirely. I definitely remember your mixed feelings about the Seahawks hiring a coach you'd previously despised.

In the end, he made some bad calls Sunday, but he also made some excellent decisions during the season, most notably, starting Russel Wilson at QB and sticking with him all the way instead of turning the team into a QB circus as happens on so many other teams in similar situations.

The only thing I can really say about the Seahawks for next season is that they lose the element of surprise. Now people expect them to be good. They've come a long way from winning the division with a losing record.

Hey PBP, you may end up with Gus Bradley for your new coach.

It would be a great loss for us definitely.

And a great gain for your Eagles if it all works out.

PBP!!!! Sportscenter just announced on my phone that Chip Kelly is leaving Oregon to become the head coach of the Iggles! Wow, that will be interesting . . . I wonder what version of offense he will attempt to run in the pros . . .

I just went on AOL (before The Fret) and found this......http://aol.sportingnews.com/nfl/sto...=maing-grid7|maing5|dl4|sec1_lnk3&pLid=257838

Looks like we are getting Kelly and not Bradley. lol Good luck to him. I hope it's a pass-happy offense and not just that eternal "screen pass" that we always get around here. I know very little about him and his coaching philosophy.

I would imagine that he's good with X's and O's. Of course......the true test will come with 2 minutes to go in the half or end of the game........can he actually make common-sense decisions regarding clock usage, time-outs and the proper play to call (meaning that if we just kicked a field goal and are leading by 2 pts, the proper play on kick-off is not an onside kick).

What can you tell me about him......as to his offensive schemes and such?

I can't tell you much specifically, other than Oregon ran a very fast paced offense, would throw long, would go for it in a "hurry up" offense kind of way, and run up huge scores on its Pac-12 opponents. There are lots of more specific analyses online. The fans are known for booing the refs for not moving the chains quickly enough saying it slows the team down. I think it will be interesting to see how much of that style he brings to the pros.

The "hurry up" offense would go over well here in Philly........under Andy Reid, we had so many delay of game penalties. Drove us bonkers.

Yep. the fact that they began that second half truly believing they could win, on the road, with a rookie QB, a young team, under such pressure, IMHO speaks volumes to his ability as a leader of THAT team. Eliminate the brain farts at the end, and those kids are 60 min away from a superbowl, with the only obstacle being a team they had just destroyed a couple weeks prior. Talk about missing it by a hair. Carroll's gotta still be having a tough time keeping his lunch down.

They'll be there again, but then again, so will Carroll.

Yeesh, now I know why Kelly took the Philly job. They gave him $32.5 million or $6.5/per. That makes him one of the highest paid coaches in the NFL even though he has never coached in any way, shape, or form on the pro level.

Well, I guess I am glad the Pats are out. I am also not going to buy into the what has come to be traditional hate between Seahawks and 49'ers fans. I will pull for them. It is a West Coast thing. :D

The 49'ers never gave up, which makes the team a winner in my book. I watched pieces of the game between installing flooring. I missed the Pat's - Ravens games while at a concert.

Inasmuch as I will root for anyone, I'll probably have to root for the Niners, just because Jim Harbaugh QB'd at Michigan back in the day.

I'll root for the Niners because FG kicker David Akers was an IGGLE for so many years. He has had and up-and-down year so far. Almost blew the game by clanking a 38 yarder off the left upright. I'd love to see him WIN the SB with a last-second long FG. Perfect way to end his career because I think he gets cut after the SB....unless he has double hernia surgery and gets accurate again. Sigh.

As to the Pats and Tom Brady losing.......this is how my daughter posted on FB....."It's okay Tom Brady. Go home to your mansion and cry into your ridiculously hot wife's ample bosom." :)

well, I'll show up and take my lumps.

hard evening.

I missed the Pat's - Ravens games while at a concert.

Let's just go ahead and call it the Raven's game, shall we? Pat's certainly didn't feel like stamping their name on it in any recognizable fashion.

Or wait, they scored a paltry ****teen points in the big game and lost to an underdog, and looked bad doing it. That is, in fact, recognizable.

In the same way the everyone mocked Eli for considering himself a worthy counterpoint to Brady, before beating him TWICE in The Game that matter most, Flacco called himself one of the best QB's in the NFL, then proceeded to beat the Bronco's and the Pats, at home in the playoffs when they (Brady and Manning) were firing on all cylinders. Can't be a sports fan and not say, well, yes. He brought it. My hats off to him.

For the record, Since 2007, Mark Sanchez has a better playoff record than Tom Brady. For review that's Sanchez > Brady. Put that in your Monday morning coffee and stir.....

Ok, enough. Go Niners.

I guess it's not my money to spend, but the limitations of a 53-man roster make me skeptical that Kelly's offense will translate to the NFL without major modifications. It succeeded at Oregon largelly because he was able to take advantage of the larger NCAA rosters.

As to the Super Bowl, I will be rooting for the 49ers because I won't be forced to endure the over-the-top media hype about any murderers on their team.

Superbowl... What a great comeback by the 49'ers!
Too bad the officials didn't call some obvious pass interference and THE holding call.

I bet the replacement ref's watching got a kick out of the Super Bowl ref's blindness.
