While I appreciate Dawn's talent as an actress, and see where a person who has had the good fortune to earn lots and lots of money would be loved as a contributor in your community, I'm not sure that acknowledging her as "not even the highest consumer of herb" is a compliment, nor an excuse for weaving across lanes of traffic while driving. I'm happy the vibe is very laid back where you live, but I can't agree with you about the "new hotshot young cops" that "won't last too long"....... whether you agree or disagree with the unfair laws prevalent in our society.......that man was doing his job.
If it were another celebrity drinking alcohol and weaving from lane to lane, it would not be acceptable. And although alcohol is a legal drug (unless you're driving under the influence of it), and a much "uglier" drug, IMO, marijuana is illegal, and unless and until the laws are changed, any law enforcement officer doing his/her job is not making "trouble by pulling all the locals over", he or she are just doing their job. I like to party as much as the next person, but what if the weaving auto had caused an accident, or had a trunk full of illegal drugs? What if it had been a drug dealer passing through?
Being a celeb doesn't excuse illegal behavior. While I don't always agree with some laws, I am friends with some law enforcement officers, and if they are to uphold the law, they must make some unpopular decisions from time to time.
It's their job.

Had a Reckless Driving 20-25 years ago... always have had designated driver or been one since.. it's a law that should be obeyed.. and they are doing their job... my bad not theirs..

And justa cause I believe Pot should be legal, does not mean I go around abusing the laws.. in public... if ya do wrong.. well, the cops are their to enforce laws. Someday, ya might just need them..

Works both ways though, I've known and worked with law enforcement people too and I can't count the number of times I've seen them protect their own and look the other way. On a couple of occasions, they just escorted their buddies home!

It wasn't the pot that got her pulled over and subsequently arrested. It was reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol after she failed a roadside sobriety test.

Now, if she had been simply smoking pot and wasn't drunk, she probably would have noticed the cop and she would have been way too paranoid to drive recklessly. If anything, she might have been pulled over for failure to maintain the minimum speed. She would likely have been more careful about the half smoked joints in the car too. The cop might have found Twinkie or Ho-Ho wrappers strewn about the car, but probably not any evidence of what might have caused the ravenous junk food fest....

Even sober the area she was driving in is extremely difficult for anyone to drive without going over the lines regardless of their condition. I too have been pulled over late at night on the very same stretch of road simply because it was after hours and the police figure anyone driving at that particular time must have been drinking. In my case I had just finished a gig and was giving the band a ride home when I was stopped. No offense - no ticket.

I saw some interviews with the original cast after they had done the made for TV movies (Rescue from Gillian's Island) and Ginger (Tina Louis, I think) was very bitter, she had been asked to come back for the reunions, but she blamed Gilligan's Island for type casting her, and "ruining her carreer". The rest of them had a lot of fun doing the two movies and they all expressed how disappointed they were that Tina refused to be a part of it. Another reason I liked Mary Ann better. She was every teenage boy's heartthrob!

The times are changing, even in Idaho. Tolerance, and "just letting it go this time" officering is much less common. Esp. after 9/11. Just my perception after having done a lot of criminal defense on the public defender contract and now privately. Here in Blaine County, where SV is, mere possession of pot/paraphernalia is regularly charged, but usually just a matter of a fine and suspended remaining sentence with unsupervised probation. The max penalty is 6 mos. jail and a $1000 fine and court costs. That means don't get into trouble, and no hassle. In other parts of the state, (one case in McCall comes to mind) it is treated very seriously (more akin to other drug tests) with mandatory 48 hours consecutive jail actually served, 100 hours community service (a drug case requirement Blaine does not view as applicable), probation with eval and treatment requirements, supervised probation with suspended remaining sentence, possibility of U/A's, a big intrusion on a person's life.

Driving under the influence of pot is a big deal anywhere, and is a complicated matter given no breath test giving statutory levels (ie, your alcohol level is over .08), special training for the officers required, etc. That said, it is a conservative state, and the mere presence of the drug in a UA and some driving pattern, testimony from an officer about demeanor, field sobriety tests, etc. might be very risky at trial, regardless of drug recognition expert training requirements. Hard to say, and expensive to find out. Also, I would not want any of my friends and family driving after having consumed pot, or around anyone driving in the same condition. Bottom line up in Blaine, the use/possession of personal use amounts of pot MAY not land you in too much trouble, and is not a huge law enforcement priority , but don't drive after. Interestingly, there was just an initiative passed in Hailey, the county seat, requiring the city to pass some laws legalizing it in certain personal use circumstances, and making it a very low priority for the city police. Hailey is refusing to act on it though. It IS contrary to state law, so they really can't, even if a city initiative was passed by the people.

In Driggs, tolerance may have existed, but I would not want to rely on that. In looking at the story, it does not say if she had a hot UA, or if she blew over or under the legal limit for alcohol, after admitting coming from a party. Interesting!


(ok, stupid lawyer disclaimer, none of the above is specific legal advice to anyone, and no attorney/client relationships are created by the communication, etc. Basically, I am just yakking about general stuff I see.)

It's really a serious matter, of course, and any responsible person would treat it that way. You would think that a 69 year old woman would know better (ya think?).

Still, it's hard not to find some humor in this incident given "Mary Ann's" popularity with about every adolescent boy at the time (myself included).
