Did they, or didn't they?

The Eagles opened a few dates for Jethro Tull in 1971 or '72 and this song was in Jethro Tull's
set at that time (from their 1969 album, "Stand Up"). As legend has it, The Eagles may have
been "inspired" by this song to write "Hotel California".

Jethro Tull's "Stand Up" was a GREAT album of the very early 70's. Spawned
hits "Bouree" & "Fat Man"....and had several great songs on it. I doubt that the Eagles consciously
ripped them off, but the seed was planted. It's an obvious "inspiration"....too bad the Eagles never
gave credit where credit was due. Actually, I heard Don Feldner of The Eagles...supposedly the
actual author say on The Howard Stern Show that "it came to him one day while on the beach",
so he ran back to his room and knocked it out in a couple of hours.

The chord progression was used by Georg Frederic Handel in the 18th century. Even he probably didn't invent it. The fabulous Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain work it to death below. I feel sorry for George Harrison

Man, Tull was good. I only have a couple of albums by them; that song makes me want to get a whole bunch more.

They do sound very similar, even in the guitar solo and everything. So it goes.

This thread reminds me that I wanted to learn the Hotel California and Aqualung guitar solos at one point, but I never ended up doing it and now most of my time is spent on bass. C'est la vie.
