The short answer is that the vintage single coil pole piece staggering was for two reasons: 1) to compensate for a 7.5" fretboard radius and 2) to compensate for a wound G string. So it's not really that the B is lower, per se, it's more that the G is raised. My G&L has flat pole pieces because it has a 12" radius and most electric string sets don't use a wound G.
