Pignose

Anyone have any experience with them? I'm lookig for a small practice amp and thought it would be a thing to get, but I've read on Harmony Central that they don't sound good with 'buckers. Any thoughts?

I had a friend who owned one. Plug in to 110 volts they sound OK of a small amp. With batteries it sounds very cheap and trebly. I do not know which model you are looking at, but I believe they are high in price. Seriously, Valve Jr. would be more satisfying if you don't need battery powered. If batteries are important look at the Vox DA5.

Thanks guys. I've read all kindsa stuff about the VJ, and was looking at the Fender Champion too, I've just always been curious about the pignose. On the other end of the spectrum, the back of the new music123 cat. has a Pocket POD for 130 bucks, which i may look into. Probably serve me better to have a practice amp with headphones anyway.

I have one but bought it when they were the only small practice amps out there. These days there's so much more value for money - Vox DA5 & Roland Micro Cube to name but two. Also you get one knob on the pignose - Volume - so Eq'ing or effects are not there!

It does sound quite pleasant (especially with Strats) but it's pretty one dimensional, I would definitely check out the alternatives.

I'm very happy with my Pignose. I think its got a great tone for a lot of the stuff I like to play (classic rock and blues mostly)...when you crank it, it has a nice mild overdrive to it. It doesn't handle humbuckers that well though, so I tend to just play strats, my tele, and my Squier '51 through it.

It is a little one dimensional...sometimes I play my Korg Ampworks through it to beef up the sound...the modeled Fender and Vox tones sound great through it (the Marshall and rectified sounds don't though - they're a bit to much for the l'il pig to handle).

I often play through my Pignose when I'm watching tv, or I'll play it along with another amp for a little added tonal flavor. Its pretty good for playing acoustics through also.

I also have the Vox Da-5, and Lev is right, in that the DA-5 doesn't cost that much more and is a lot more versatile. But I think that the Pignose has a sweet tone, and I ain't ever going to part with it. (I actually play the Da-5 and the Pignose together a lot).
