Stripping and Painting

I disassembled my project axe (70's or 80's Memphis telecaster) this weekend and am ready to strip and paint it. Sand or heat to strip is fine and dandy but I'm just wondering about paints. Preliminary research indicates I can use any old spray paint. It's the nitro coating that I have to be particular about. Is this accurate?
