This showed up in the mail 2 days ago. There are several songs that I'll put in the top Smithereens all time list.

I'd vote it their quintessential album. If you've never listened to them, that's the place to start.

I'm guessing you mean 2011above, and not 11from 1989. A bit confusing, naming both with similar names.

Actually, I just looked quickly and thought it was 11 which is the one I am thinking of. My bad.

Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events
Fairly typical Dream Theater stuff. Sounds pretty good with the new drummer. The keyboards drive me nuts sometimes, but that is always a DT issue for me.

EDIT: The more times I listen, the better this album gets.

Cool! I forgot. Thanks for the reminder.
How's it sound? I'm thinking you won't be playing it at your Sunday services. :poke
Heh, probably not. I'm only about half way listening to it for the first time. My initial reaction is that there's more melodic-esque moments than I expected (or I'm getting more metal as I get older). The first track and the two "Hymn" tracks are probably unnecessary. I suppose it's ambiance or something. Further report when I get through it a time or two.

Edit: After a couple of listens, I would say that there's some really good stuff on here. The first track and "Hymn" tracks (as I previously mentioned) could have been left off and no one really would have been the wiser. The first part of the album is much better than the end. The last three tracks are hit-and-miss. "Crawl" is just OK. "The Constant" and "Revolution Screams" definitely have their moments. The latter has about a five minute gap before another five minute "hidden" track kicks in, which I find annoying more than anything else.

Tracks 2-5 are really good, with "Fight 'Em Til You Can't" being the best, IMO. That one is up there with my favorite Anthrax songs ("Bring the Noise," "Got the Time," "Antisocial," among others). Tracks 7, 8, and 10 are good too, although "In the End" seems more melodic in the refrain than I would expect from them. They have some Maiden-esque guitar parts in there that make up for that, IMO.

Overall, I'd say that this album is definitely worth the cash. Anthrax with Joey Belladonna--what's not to love? I'll just play the beginning of the album far more than I'll play the end. Old skool thrash fans might be put off by the album's melodic moments. Those moments aren't SO melodic though that it would appeal to the typical fan of, say, Poison or Motley Crue. It is still definitely thrash. My wife will hate it :)

Today is the birthday of two of my biggest musical heroes, Bruce Springsteen and John Coltrane.

Splitting my listening time today between the two.

Up first...

+1

I have the complete 4 disc Stockholm concerts release. Miles' tone throughout is just about perfect, my ideal for what trumpet tone should sound like.

Ok so I can admit it, I really missed the boat on these guys.

Honestly, I can't even recall what it was I didn't like about them when I first listened however many years ago that was and I really never gave them a fair shake after that.

I read enough reviews of this new album to decide it was time to give them another listen. I can't thank myself enough for that. I will be obsessed with this album for some time to come and will likely revisit their past catalog with new ears as well.

I think you'll enjoy it R_of_G. I've not heard the new one yet, and honestly wasn't grabbed by what I did hear....been too busy to delve. I will, soon enough.

I'm in the same boat. I'm enjoying their music tremendously!

Edit: Wait until you hear "You Never Know" from Wilco The Album. You'll think George Harrison was reincarnated for one song!

Chris Cain - Hall of Shame
How did I not hear of this guy until now? Incredible blues and jazz guitarist. Deep, soulful singing and playing.

Well that sounds promising. Will have to make sure that one's in today's rotation.
