Marc Ribot's Really the Blues
Live 09/15/11 @ Iridium Jazz, NYC

From marcribot.com

This band isn't a tribute to anything, except the form itself, black America's ' birth of tragedy', a rhythmic platform on which one can hear a human being, armed only with a Fender Jaguar guitar, contest their fate.

The starting points are mid 50's Chicago, and a certain kind of soul jazz one could hear on late night radio if one happened to live near Newark, New Jersey in the late 60's. The endpoint isn't fixed, the capacity for misreading infinite.

"Blues To Die For"........Leslie West; 2003. Leslie doing his version of tunes by his heroes...BB King, Albert King, Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, etc.

Uneven album.......but at times with Leslie playing like the way we HOPE Leslie would play, it's great git playing for sure. Pretty good singing too. Highlights are Mean Mistreater, I'm Ready, Talk to Your Daughter (slide) and Why I Sing The Blues. The last tune is 7 minutes of P-90 crunch heaven!!

New to me:
George Harrison - Live in Japan

Love the version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on that one, and not for Clapton's blistering solo (which does anything but gently weep), but for the doo-*** arrangement of the backing singers on the chorus sections.

Been playing "Wildwood Flower" on the acoustic a lot recently. His is the one I most hear in my head when I play. The rest of the album is also awesome.

Angel Witch was one of the original NWoBHM bands along with the likes of Iron Maiden, Saxon, and even Def Leppard. For various reasons, they never had the success of Maiden and the others. I can't help wondering what this album could have been if it had been recorded/mixed better. Their singer lacks the power or gravitas of many of his contemporaries. The track "Angel Witch" is a highlight.
