Considering I've been playing less than a year, here's my list not counting the Squier acoustic and gig bag for my one son or the banjo for another, or the bucket drum for another.

Adding up stuff can get scary fast, can't it?

Since I started this thread just over a year ago, I've spent well over 5 bills (the smaller ones, Benjamins, not thousands!) on guitars/basses, and if you add in my second mandolin and a tuner I bought as a result of getting into my folk rock/acoustic side band, it's just over $600. Although I am planning on selling one of the guitars I bought, and making a small profit. Also, I just found out that one of my small amps on consignment in a local shop finally sold, so that'll be a little extra moolah returning as well.

I've probably made, in cash and bar/food tab credit, at least another hundred from shows, as well.

So, I guess it could be worse.

It helps that I've run out of places to put this stuff!

I suppose I should play too... This is not counting stuff I don't own any more, which means no counting things I've taken a loss on -- there's a ton of stuff I've either sold on the cheap or given away. There's probably a minimum of 1G taken up with that stuff. Also, I think this is probably on the conservative side, to be perfectly honest.

Man, that feels like a lot of money. I guess it's not that much in the long run, but it feels like too much.

I'll soon be a bit lighter in all departments, as I'm donating the Xaviere to my church and selling the Fender to someone I know who's learning, and I might give some other unused stuff to other friends. I suppose that makes me feel a little better, though the fact remains that the money has gone out the door already...

Then there's my DVM-made Thesis 96 OD pedal which is, in fact, priceless.

It is hard to keep track of actual costs because of trade-ins, etc.

Between the Marshall and Les Paul, that in itself is about $5k... I have estimated everything over the years (including PA stuff, stomp boxes, etc.) to be in excess of $15k.

Damn, now you got me thinking about it seriously.

Cars? Not a lot. I buy old junkers only, say at best something that costs three-four months salary. BUT considering all the maintenance and gas etc. that's still a LOT more than I've put in music, that's right.

Vacations? Hard one too. If I count in all the family vacations for kids, they're certainly more expensive than music. If I count my own bar adventures in vacationing, even more so

Lunch...I have always tried to save on lunches. I ate those horrible, small microwave pizzas cold for lunch at work for three years. Still do sometimes, when I feel broke. But now I have a microwave at the office.

Alcohol is probably one of the biggest expenditures ever. I probably spend well over two grand on alcohol a year, and when I was single I probably half of that in a month even.

Computers...say half a grand or so a year isn't far off the mark.

Hm...actually, why don't I look at my bookkeeping...

Yes, my montly budget is 40% food incl. alcohol and daily household stuff, 24% entertainment (TV and network etc.) 20% house, utility bills and mortgage, 10% gas and car insurance, 6% misc. costs like medical and memberships etc.

WHoa. Looking at that, it's quite amazing I've racked up so many phones, computers and TV thingies etc. that it's nearly a quarter of our household expenditure! Well over 300 bucks a month If I had no communication fees, I could pay 50% more mortgage payments! Or buy a nice guitar or amp every month!

Well, damn, I'm writing this on our #4 PC, the tiny one...and I have two windows mobile PDAs and wife has a smartphone etc...and all of course limitless 3G like laptops as well...
